The Selected Papers from the 6th Congress Tracks and Treks in Translation Studies (TS) held at the University of Leuven, Belgium in 2010 congregated scholars and practitioners presenting their ideas and research in this thriving domain. This volume includes fifteen carefully selected articles which represent the diversity and breadth of the topics dealt with in Translation Studies today, increasingly bolstered by its interaction with other disciplines. At the same time it aims to provide a balance between process and product oriented research, and training and professional practice. The authors cover both Translating and Interpreting from a myriad of approaches, touching upon topics such as creativity, pleasant voice, paratext and translator intervention, project-based methodologies, revision, corpora, and individual translation styles, to name but a few. This volume will hopefully contribute to further fruitful interaction and cohesion which are essential to the international status of TS.

Originally published in different journals and collected volumes, these papers in conceptual analysis cover some central topics in translation theory and research: types of theory and hypothesis; causality and explanation; norms, strategies and so-called universals; translation sociology, and ethics. There are critical reviews of Catford’s theory, and of Skopos theory, and of Kundera’s views on literary translation, and detailed analyses of the literal translation hypothesis and the unique items hypothesis. The methodological discussions, which draw on work in the philosophy of science, will be of special relevance to younger researchers, for example those starting work on a doctorate. Some of the arguments and positions defended – for instance on the significant status of conceptual, interpretive hypotheses, and the ideal of consilience – relate to wider ongoing debates, and will interest any scholar who is concerned about the increasing fragmentation of the field and about the future of Translation Studies. Let the dialogue continue!

The volume contains a selection of papers, both theoretical and empirical, from the European Society for Translation Studies (EST) Congress held in Copenhagen in September 2001. The EST Congresses, held every three years in a different country, reflect current ideas, theories and studies covering the whole range of "Translation", both oral and written, and the papers collected here, authored by both experienced and young translation scholars, provide an up-to-date picture of some concerns in the field. Topics covered include translation universals, linguistic approaches to translation, translation strategies, quality and assessment issues, screen translation, the translation of humor, terminological issues, translation and related professions, translation and ideology, language brokering by children, Robert Schumann’s relation to translation, directionality in translation and interpreting, community interpreting in Italy, issues in interpreting for refugees, notes in consecutive interpreting, interpreting prosody, and frequent weaknesses in translation papers in the context of the editorial process.

This volume brings together a selection of papers presented at an international conference on Translation Studies in Barcelona in 1998. The papers illustrate four areas that are of particular interest in translation research today in Europe, Asia and Latin America. The purpose of the first section, ‘Investigating Translation Paradigms’, is to reach a critical revision of existing paradigms and to develop new ones in approaching the translated text. The second section, ‘Investigating the Translation Process’, focuses on the skills, knowledge and strategies that make up translation competence. The third section, ‘Investigating Translation and Ideology’ addresses not only the ‘invisible’ influence of ideologies on the translator, but also the role of translators in transmitting ideology. The fourth section, ‘Investigating Translation Receivers’ envisages translators as communicators caught between the opposing trends of localisation and globalisation. This tension can be seen in the selection of the papers, some of which reflect on research carried out in recently established translation centres in Spain, while others discuss the latest work of scholars from long established centres in other countries.

To address the idea of agency in translation is to highlight the interplay of power and ideology: what gets translated or not and why a text is translated is mainly a matter of exercising power or reflecting authority. The contributions in this book serve as an attempt to understand the complex nature of agency in terms of its relation to agents of translation; the role of translatorial agents and the way they exercise their agency in (de)constructing narratives of power and identity; and the influence of translatorial agency on the various processes of translation and hence on the final translation product as well. A selection of 44 papers out of the 163 presented at the Translation Studies Congress, which was held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Institut für Dolmetscher und Übersetzer Ausbildung in Vienna, shows how translation studies is moving away from purely linguistic analysis into LSP, psychology, cognition, and cultural orientations. The volume is divided into sections reflecting the focal subject areas at the Congress: Translation, history and culture; Interpreting theory and training; Terminology and special languages; Teaching and training in translation. Also included are papers from a special workshop including interdisciplinary research projects from Vienna. Of the articles, 25 are written in English, 16 in German, and 3 in French.
