Die Jahrestaqung 1978 der Deutschen Gesellschaft fUr Operations Research fand in der Zeit vom 4. bis 6. Oktober in den R~umen der Freien Universit~t Berlin statt. Mit Uber 400 Teilnehmern und 125 Vortr~gen war sie eine der groBten Taqungen der Gesellschaft. Zahlreiche ausl~ndische Gastreferenten bereicherten durch Fach und Ubersichtsvortr!ge das weitgespannte Tagungsprogramm. In Berlin wurde mit Erfolg ein neuer Tagungsstil verwirklicht, der i.w. darin bestand, daB frUhzeitig die derzeit wichtigsten Gebiete des Operations Research zu Sektionen zusammengefaBt wurden. Die wissenschaftliche Betreuung dieser Sektionen geschah durch Sektionsleiter, denen es insbesondere zu verdanken 1st, daB den Fachbeitr~gen vieler Sektionen ein einfUhrendes Ubersichtsreferat vorangestellt werden konnte. Eine weitere Besonderheit der Tagung bestand in einer Verl!ngerung der Rede- und Diskussionszeit, was zusammen mit der graBen Anzahl von Vortr~gen dazu fUhrte, daB ver gleichsweise viele Parallelsitzungen stattfanden. Die Proceedings sollen nun einen Uberblick Uber das wissenschaft liche Tagungsprogramm geben. Dabei wurde besonderer Wert darauf gelegt, wenigstens den Ubersichtsvortr~gen breiten Raum zu gew!hren. Die Fachbeitr~ge muBten h~ufig gedr!ngter dargestellt werden, jedoch wurde darauf geachtet, daB - abgesehen von wenigen Ausnahmen - dem interessierten Leser eine ausfUhrliche Fassung zug~nglich 1st. Besondere Anerkennung gebuhrt der ortlichen Tagungsorganisation unter Leitung von Prof. Dr. P. Stahlknecht, der es ganz wesentlich zu verdanken 1st, daB in der angenehmen und anregenden Tagungs atmosphare eine FUlle wissenschaftlicher Kontakte geknUpft werden konnte. Unser Dank gilt auch den Referenten und nicht zuletzt den Sektions und Sitzungleitern, die einen wesentlichen Anteil an der Gestaltung dieses Tagungsbandes haben.

The main problem with regard to alloplastic joints is the loosening of the implant. Twenty years ago, Charnley first introduced bone cement to hip surgery, enabling total hip replacement to be practised on a larger scale. There is no question, however, that new approaches must be found to solving the problems of implant loosening, either by developing a new type of cement or by directly anchoring the implant without using ce ment. Much research has been done in this direction in recent years. The methods which have already been tested or are currently being tested were presented and discussed at a symposium on Cementless Fixation of Endoprostheses organized by the Orthopaedic Clinic of the University of Basel and held on 24-26 June 1982. Various possible ap proaches which might be realized in practice were discussed in a relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the biomechanical bases of cementless fixa tion of endoprostheses, the various models were discussed, with special regard to their biocompatibility, physical characteristics, design, clinical applicability, and previous clinical experience. This book contains the papers delivered at this symposium.

This volume presents a collection of papers presented at the 14th International Symposium of Robotic Research (ISRR). ISRR is the biennial meeting of the International Foundation of Robotic Research (IFRR) and its 14th edition took place in Lucerne, Switzerland, from August 31st to September 3rd, 2009. As for the previous symposia, ISRR 2009 followed up on the successful concept of a mixture of invited contributions and open submissions. Half of the 48 presentations were therefore invited contributions from outstanding researchers selected by the IFRR officers, and half were chosen among the 66 submissions after peer review. This selection process resulted in a truly excellent technical program which, we believe, featured some of the very best of robotic research. Out of the 48 presentations, the 42 papers which were finally submitted for publication are organized in 8 sections that encompass the major research orientations in robotics: Navigation, Control & Planning, Human-Robot Interaction, Manipulation and Humanoids, Learning, Mapping, Multi-Robot Systems, and Micro-Robotics. They represent an excellent snapshot of cutting-edge research in robotics and outline future directions.
