Isoflavonoids are a valuable group of natural products and are primarily synthesised in leguminous plants, where they play important roles in plant defence. They also have significant health benefits for animals and humans and have been ascribed various estrogenic, antiangiogenic, antioxidant, and anticancer activities, leading to their popularity as dietary supplements. This book gathers and presents topical research data on isoflavones including bioactive isoflavones and their implications in cancer treatment and prevention, soy protein and isoflavones in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and the processing techniques on isoflavone profiles.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Health Science, grade: B, The University of Liverpool, language: English, abstract: The impact of soy foods on potential breast cancer risk has been a topic of considerable investigation in the medical field. The primary importance of research on soy foods is derived from the fact that these foods are rich in isoflavones, which are supposedly associated with inhibition of breast cancer development (Messina & Wood, 2008, p.1). Isoflavones are mainly contained in soybeans. High soy food intake in Asian countries like Japan is said to have sparked research on the role of isoflavones on reduction of breast cancer in 1990s (Messina & Wu, 2009, p.1673). Some isoflavones such as genistein possess non-hormonal properties that are associated with breast cancer inhibition in women. Thus, it is highly prudent to say that there are several mechanisms by which soy may reduce the risk of breast cancer in women. However, recent epidemiological studies have provided evidence suggesting that isoflavones indeed promote breast cancer (Kang et al, 2010, p.1859). This is because isoflavones such as geinstein have been found to stimulate growth of breast cancer cells which are estrogen-sensitive in overectomized mice. Several in vitro studies have shown that isoflavones can both inhibit or enhance ability of drugs to fight breast cancer (Nagata, 2010, p.83). Thus, understanding of the effects of isoflavones on breast cancer is still vague. This paper explores whether consumption of soy foods and isoflavones cause or inhibit breast cancer in women. In section 1, definitions of Isoflavones, biological functions and endocrine therapies will be given. In section 2, supporting literature on the positive and negative effects of isoflavones will be discussed. In section 3, several studies will be used as examples to support the information provided in section 2.

Isoflavones are naturally occurring molecules present in significant amounts in many leguminous, some of which are edible plants. Isoflavones exhibit similarities in their chemical structure with steroidal estrogens, which allows them to trigger some of the endogenous physiocellular signalisation processes of estrogens that are known to occur naturally within living organisms. In fact, isoflavones mediate numerous health effects mainly related to their estrogenic and/or anti-estrogenic actions. Some of these effects are oestrogen receptor-mediated physiological phenomena such as those linked to the hypothalamo-hypophyso-gonadal axis. This book provides in vitro, animal, and clinical data intending to highlight the impact of isoflavones on the physio-cellular features of the hippocampal formation plasticity and, therefore, on the hippocampus-dependent cognitive brain function.

Soybeans are greatly used in many foods, such as tofu, soy milk and yogurt, and it plays an important role as a functional food in the health and prevention of various diseases. Soybeans contain rich isoflavones including genistein, daidzein and glycitein, and both genistein and daidzein occur at higher concentrations. Isoflavones are structurally and functionally similar to 17ß-estradiol. Isoflavones are found to bind to estrogen receptors and the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) family and aryl hydrocarbon receptors. Moreover, isoflavones affect activity of tyrosine kinases, histones, transcription factors, adenosine mono phosphate pathways, RNA expression and other intracellular regulators. Thus, isoflavones play a multifunctional role in cell regulation. This book focuses on recent advances in the food sources, biological activity and health benefits of genistein and daizen.

Polyphenol phytoestrogens – bioactives found in specific foods and beverages – impart antioxidant, phytoestrogenic, antiproliferative, and enzyme modulating activities within the human metabolic system. It is believed that these compounds protect against several forms of cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, osteoporosis, and menopausal symptoms. While there has been a rise in polyphenol research over the past few years resulting from this discovery, there has not been a thorough, single source guide that synthesizes and explains the attained information – until now. Phytoestrogens in Functional Foods comprehensively details the scientific, technical, and practical aspects involved in the production, consumption, and safety of phytoestrogens in foods. The book is divided into five parts for easy reference. Section I, Production, introduces the topic of phytoestrogens and addresses the biosynthesis of polyphenol phytoestrogens in plants, and the chemistry and mechanism of action of phytoestrogens. Section II, Consumption, explains pharmacokinetics, body composition, and cell signaling. Section III, Risk and Benefit Analysis, examines reproductive hormones in females, hormone replacement therapy, and the benefits and risks associated with phytoestrogens. Section IV, Optimization and Utilization, discusses soy isoflavones and health, while Section V, Applications, explains wine antioxidants and phytoestrogens. While extensive investigation of these topics has led to many conflicting reports about their risks and benefits, this text provides answers and insight on the major questions regarding the core areas of polyphenol research.

Soy products, including both protein & isoflavones, have been touted for a number of clinical benefits related to a putative estrogen-like effect. This study conducted a systematic review to describe the range of soy products & outcomes that have been studied, to summarize the effects of soy consumption to prevent a wide variety of medical conditions in healthy adults, & to summarize adverse events related to soy consumption. However, a large proportion of the studies suffer from poor reporting or study design, limiting conclusions. Hence many questions remain as to whether specific soy products in adequate doses may be of benefit in specific populations. Further, well-conducted studies are needed. Illustrations.
