Excerpt from Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 3 The publication of a third volume of 'Papers' by the British School at Rome may fairly be taken as evidence of its continued activity and usefulness. The first paper contains a further instalment of the valuable work which the Assistant-Director, Mr. Ashby, is doing for the recovery of the lost history of the Campagna Romana. In this department of study Mr. Ashby has won for himself a well-deserved reputation as an indefatigable explorer, and a scrupulously accurate observer. It may be added in proof of the estimation in which Mr. Ashby is held by foreign scholars, and also of the friendly relations existing between the British School and the other foreign schools in Rome, that some of his shorter papers have been published by the French School in their Melanges. The papers by Mr. Stuart Jones and Mr. Wace are both of them valuable contributions to the study of a subject which has only recently received its due share of attention, the growth and development of Roman historical sculpture. Of especial importance are Mr. Stuart-Jones's arguments in favour of assigning the Borghese reliefs to the time of Trajan, and Mr. Wace's claim to have discovered in the Lateran and Vatican Museums fragments of reliefs belonging to the time of Domitian, which help to fill a gap in our knowledge of the development of Roman historical reliefs.
