Esta tese examina a origem, a diversidade e o sincretismo das explicações cotidianas para as doenças genéticas. Em um primeiro estudo de abordagem etnográfica, foram entrevistados cerca de uma centena de indivíduos pertencentes a duas comunidades familiares distintas com reduzida escolaridade que vivem em contato com fenômenos patológicos hereditários por várias gerações. Uma explicação genérica foi encontrada para a origem das doenças. Um determinado ancestral teria adquirido uma doença - sífilis, a qual teria contaminado o sangue de todos os descendentes, sendo possível assim que qualquer um deles origineprole afetada. As formulações elaboradas pelos depoentes são respaldadas por evidências observáveis, constituindo um conjunto de conhecimentos cotidianos bastante estruturado, compartilhado pelos membros das comunidades familiares que tende a ser conservado a despeito da influência escolar. em um segundo estudo, ogjetivando a descrição da diversidade de explicações para herança e as evidências utilizadas pelos consulentes para respaldar seus modelos, entrevistamos trinta e cinco consulentes com diferentes níveis de escolaridade residentes em São Paulo. Descrevemos extensamente cinco classes de modelos explicativos para o surgimento da doença na família e os fatores associados à diversidade das explicações. No terceiro estudo, o fenômeno do sincretismo de modelos explicativos para os fenômenos hereditários foi apresentado a parti.

Evolution Education and the Rise of the Creationist Movement in Brazil examines how larger societal forces such as religion, media, and politics have shaped Brazil’s educational landscape and impacted the teaching and learning of evolution within an increasingly polarized discourse in recent years.
