La obra de Gramsci se ha convertido, desde hace algunos años, en una referencia imprescindible para el análisis de nuestras sociedades postindustriales y la comprensión de los procesos sociales y culturales. Los textos seleccionados en esta antología conforman un amplio panorama de las ideas que desarrolló Gramsci en el terreno de la lucha por la transformación social: la discusión en torno a los consejos obreros y la autonomía proletaria; el debate sobre la hegemonía y la dominación política; la reflexión en torno a la pasión política, la espontaneidad y la dirección consciente, el diálogo a favor de una convergencia entre las culturas; la defensa de la cultura popular y su problemática específica. Los textos de Gramsci son pequeños ensayos que concentran en sí toda una estructura de pensamiento rigurosa y creativa orientada a la emancipación social. Antonio Gramsci (Ales, Cerdeña, 1891-Roma, 1937) ha sido uno de los mayores renovadores del pensamiento marxista del siglo XX. En Turín, donde estudió filología, se vinculó a los círculos obreros, escribió críticas de teatro y se convirtió en el principal teórico del movimiento de los consejos de fábrica (1919-1920). En esa época innovó radicalmente el lenguaje político en la revista L'Ordine Nuovo. Desde 1922 a 1926 fue activista destacado del núcleo dirigente del Partido Comunista Italiano y analista excepcional de la "cuestión meridional". Detenido y encarcelado por el fascismo mussoliniano, pasó diez años enfermo en distintas prisiones de Italia en las que escribió los Cuadernos de la cárcel (1929-1935). Pensó la política comunista como ética colectiva del pueblo y acuñó o dio una forma nueva a conceptos que han pasado a formar parte del lenguaje político de la ciudadanía democrática de este fin de siglo: hegemonía, sociedad civil, nacional-popular, revolución pasiva, filosofía de la praxis, transformismo de los intelectuales, intelectual colectivo, reforma moral e intelectual, etc. A pesar de su carácter fragmentario, la obra de Gramsci ha influido durante décadas en la cultura alternativa de los cinco continentes.

This book takes an innovative look at international relations. Focusing on the worldwide campaign against abuses by the right-wing authoritarian regime in Uruguay (1973-1984), it explores how norms and ideas interact with political interests, both global and domestic. It examines joint actions by differently-motivated actors such as the leftist activists who had to flee Uruguay in these years, the Organization of American States, The United Nations, Amnesty International, and the United States. It traces language and procedures for making their claims. The chief goal, however, is to peruse the specific reasons that led these actors to endorse the central core of liberal rights that gave foundation to this system. A close examination of the available documents shows that even as they joined efforts to protest abuses, they were still pursuing their individual agendas, which is often overlooked in the existing scholarship on human rights transnational activism. The book pays special attention to the Uruguayan exiles, analyzing why and how leftist activists and leaders adopted the human rights language, which had so far been used to attack communism in the context of the Cold War.
