"Paradise Glossed" is a collection of poems, a diary in rhyme - and a Bristolian book by a Bristolian author. It was written over the course of twelve months at a very specific point in Britain's history - the "fag-end of New Labour", and the height of the modern technological age. Desperately seeking the chinks of light amidst the 21st Century gloom of 'X-Factor' culture, social networking, mobile texting and super-rich corporations, the author has a ball in letting off steam via this crazy log in which, it seems, no-one or nothing is safe - the Royal family, Prime-Ministers, "The Matthew", mobile phones, balloons, Simon Cowell (?) Drawing on topical and historical themes, and with a strong local flavour throughout, "Paradise Glossed" is the author's humorous take on an historic and infamous twelve months set between May 2009 and April 2010, which began with the MP's expenses scandal and ended with us nervously awaiting the result of the General Election......

Yes, the Bristolian 'diary of doom' is BACK - and picking up where it left off, the General Election has come and gone and Britain faces severe economic hardship under the Con-Dem coalition from hell..... David Cameron, Nick Clegg, George Osborne and the "Ginger Lib" ( ) all face the wrath of Bristolian fury as the author renews his war on gutless politicians, broken promises, shattered dreams, 'elimination TV', celebrity culture, wayward teenagers, Royal weddings and...........growing old!! Still, at least our Polish friends are around to cheer us all up during these times of strife.........right There's a "Famous Five" story with a difference, fatherly "advice" to the new Leader of the Opposition, more "tributes" to famous Bristolians who've come and gone, and, just for good measure - Hitler's war poems have been found in a Berlin bunker - thankfully, they've all been translated into English for the great British public to "enjoy.."...

Heresy In The University written by Jacques Berlinerblau and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Education categories.

Berlinerblau (Judaic studies, Hofstra U.) explores the reactions--widely divergent but mostly intense--to Martin Bernal's 1987 publication of the first volume of Black Athena: The Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization. In light of classicist reacting to an outsider's intrusion into their field and Afrocentrist accusation of stealing the material from black scholars, he considers the question of intellectual responsibility during an age of cultural warfare. He also elucidates the contents of the book itself. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

"Waldman's book is terrific-good sense mustered with evidence, well argued, and sharply written to boot. I agree fervently with almost everything he writes. This is the indispensable book for the 2006 elections." --Todd Gitlin, author of The Sixties and The Twilight of Common Dreams "A well-sourced, partisan blueprint for undoing Republican control of the nation." --Publishers Weekly "Here's the ticket for Democrats to get back in power: read this book, understand what it means to be a true American progressive, expose conservatives as the mean elitists they are, get tough, and fight back. Nobody paints the strengths of progressives and the weaknesses of conservatives like Paul Waldman." --Bill Press, author How the Republicans Stole Christmas "With clarity and passion, Paul Waldman demonstrates persuasively that the forces of the right have not 'taken over the country,' as the media often lazily put it. They've only taken over politics. That can be reversed, and Waldman shows exactly how." --Michael Tomasky, Editor, the American Prospect

Since the late 1980s, there has been an explosion of women’s writing in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe greater than in any other cultural period. This book, which contains contributions by scholars and writers from many different countries, aims to address the gap in literature and debate that exists in relation to this subject. We investigate why women’s writing has become so prominent in post-socialist countries, and enquire whether writers regard their gender as a burden, or, on the contrary, as empowering. We explore the relationship in contemporary women’s writing between gender, class, and nationality, as well as issues of ethnicity and post-colonialism.

Stop letting anxiety run your life. If you're like one of the millions of Americans who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks every year, you probably spend too much time in your own head. Though our minds are great places to solve complex problems, they’re borderline destructive when it comes to handling fear and anxiety. The reason for this is simple: as perplexing and terrifying as it may be, fear is but a feeling, and you cannot “solve” feelings. All you can do is choose to focus on them or let them be. Unfortunately, so many of us opt for the former route, overanalyzing fear endlessly, helplessly plunging ourselves into further spirals of darkness and anxiety. Not only is this no way to live, but it’s also no way to approach fear, for until we break out of such apprehensive thinking, it will only continue to drag us down further and further. Thus, in order to alleviate anxiety, we must break free from these fear cycles. But how? That's exactly what you'll discover in this book. As you read this relatable self-help title, you'll learn: -What anxiety is and where it comes from -Why we keep perpetuating our anxiety, even when we know it doesn't serve us -Ten helpful tactics for mitigating acute episodes of panic and anxiety -How to develop an overall lifestyle of calm and inner peace Ready to get started? Then scroll up and hit the "buy now" button to grab your copy and move closer to making those fear cycles a thing of the past.

Milton Keynes In British Culture written by Lauren Pikó and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-23 with Architecture categories.

The new town of Milton Keynes was designated in 1967 with a bold, flexible social vision to impose "no fixed conception of how people ought to live." Despite this progressive social vision, and its low density, flexible, green urban design, the town has been consistently represented in British media, political rhetoric and popular culture negatively. as a fundamentally sterile, paternalistic, concrete imposition on the landscape, as a "joke", and even as "Los Angeles in Buckinghamshire". How did these meanings develop at such odds from residents' and planners' experiences? Why have these meanings proved so resilient? Milton Keynes in British Culture traces the representations of Milton Keynes in British national media, political rhetoric and popular culture in detail from 1967 to 1992, demonstrating how the town's founding principles came to be understood as symbolic of the worst excesses of a postwar state planning system which was falling from favour. Combining approaches from urban planning history, cultural history and cultural studies, political economy and heritage studies, the book maps the ways in which Milton Keynes' newness formed an existential challenge to ideals of English landscapes as receptacles of tradition and closed, fixed national identities. Far from being a marginal, "foreign" and atypical town, the book demonstrates how the changing political fortunes of state urban planned spaces were a key site of conflict around ideas of how the British state should function, how its landscapes should look, and who they should be for.

Stumbling On Happiness written by Daniel Gilbert and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-05-02 with Psychology categories.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Bringing to life scientific research in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, and behavioral economics, this witty, accessible book reveals what scientists have discovered about the uniquely human ability to imagine the future, and about our capacity to predict how much we will like it when we get there. • Why are lovers quicker to forgive their partners for infidelity than for leaving dirty dishes in the sink? • Why will sighted people pay more to avoid going blind than blind people will pay to regain their sight? • Why do dining companions insist on ordering different meals instead of getting what they really want? • Why do pigeons seem to have such excellent aim; why can’t we remember one song while listening to another; and why does the line at the grocery store always slow down the moment we join it? In this brilliant book, renowned Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert describes the foibles of imagination and illusions of foresight that cause each of us to misconceive our tomorrows and misestimate our satisfactions. With penetrating insight and sparkling prose, Gilbert explains why we seem to know so little about the hearts and minds of the people we are about to become.
