Quando scrive le sue pagine sull’hashish – di cui condanna l’abuso – egli non ha mai intenti moralistici, ma essenzialmente estetici. Quello che a lui interessa è il potenziamento della creatività poetica attraverso l’ebrezza artificiale; quello che lui odia e teme è il risveglio, è la desolazione, è l’inferno della degradazione. Si disegna qui il dramma personale di Baudelaire, la sua consapevolezza di essere e di sentirsi lacerato fra i due opposti richiami di Dio e Satana, fra l’aspirazione a salire verso l’alto, l’infinito, e il gusto del peccato, il piacere di scendere in basso. Charles Baudelairenato a Parigi nel 1821, a soli diciannove anni abbandonò la famiglia e iniziò una vita sregolata e bohémienne, segnata anche da difficoltà economiche e dall’uso dell’alcol e delle droghe. Partecipò alla rivoluzione del ’48, ma presto si allontanò dagli ideali socialisti. Tra il 1864 e il 1866 visse in Belgio. Morì a Parigi nel 1867. La Newton Compton ha pubblicato I Fiori del Male e tutte le poesie, Paradisi artificiali e la raccolta Tutte le poesie e i capolavori in prosa.
