En 1986, en momentos en que se organizaban las nuevas fuerzas vivas del periodo postoligárquico, la prensa acuñó el término "Doce Apóstoles" cuando los doce mayores empresarios fueron convocados por el presidente Alan García para discutir el rumbo que el país debía tomar. Desde entonces se acostumbra a hablar de los Doce Apóstoles, entendiendo por ello los jefes de la docena más grande y fuerte de empresas peruanas conglomeradas. Sin embargo, debido a los cambios que el país, la economía, y la propia élite económica han experimentado en las últimas décadas, es necesario volver a identificarlos y presentar una imagen más nítida y precisa de los "apóstoles" del siglo XXI. En su más reciente publicación, Francisco Durand hace un análisis minucioso de la trayectoria y variado poder, tanto económico como político y social, de los doce grupos de poder económico (GPE) peruanos más influyentes en la actualidad, pues a pesar de la abundante información existente acerca de estas élites influyentes todavía se conoce poco sobre ellos. Este libro propone un mejor conocimiento de los grupos a través del desarrollo de conceptos y discusión de teorías, la comprensión del contexto en el cual aparecieron y se desarrollaron, y la comparación, caso por caso, de seis grupos limeños (Benavides, Graña y Montero, Brescia, Ferreyros, Rodríguez-Pastor y Romero) con media docena de grupos de origen provinciano (Rodríguez, Añaños, Dyer, Acuña, Huancaruna y Flores). Esta comparación nos permite entender los cambios y continuidades del país, y la textura del poder económico corporativo, así como determinar el grado de cohesión de las élites que manejan estos grupos. También se analiza la actuación de estos GPE y los mecanismos que usan para traducir su enorme riqueza en influencia sobre las decisiones de política pública: financiamiento de campañas, lobbies y "puertas giratorias".
