Liminal Fiction at the Edge of the Millennium: The Ends of Spanish Identity investigates the predominant perception of liminality—identity situated at a threshold, neither one thing nor another, but simultaneously both and neither—caused by encounters with otherness while negotiating identity in contemporary Spain. Examining how identity and alterity are parleyed through the cultural concerns of historical memory, gender roles, sex, religion, nationalism, and immigration, this study demonstrates how fictional representations of reality converge in a common structure wherein the end is not the end, but rather an edge, a liminal ground. On the border between two identities, the end materializes as an ephemeral limit that delineates and differentiates, yet also adjoins and approximates. In exploring the ends of Spanish fiction—both their structure and their intentionality—Liminal Fiction maps the edge as a constitutive component of narrative and identity in texts by Najat El Hachmi, Cristina Fernández Cubas, Javier Marías, Rosa Montero, and Manuel Rivas. In their representation of identity on the edge, these fictions enact and embody the liminal not as simply a transitional and transient mode but as the structuring principle of identification in contemporary Spain.

This book deals with an aspect of the Great War that has been largely overlooked: the war reportage written based on British and American authors’ experiences at the Western Front. It focuses on how the liminal experience of the First World War was portrayed in a series of works of literary journalism at different stages of the conflict, from the summer of 1914 to the Armistice in November 1918. Sara Prieto explores a number of representative texts written by a series of civilian eyewitness who have been passed over in earlier studies of literature and journalism in the Great War. The texts under discussion are situated in the ‘liminal zone’, as they were written in the middle of a transitional period, half-way between two radically different literary styles: the romantic and idealising ante bellum tradition, and the cynical and disillusioned modernist school of writing. They are also the product of the various stages of a physical and moral journey which took several authors into the fantastic albeit nightmarish world of the Western Front, where their understanding of reality was transformed beyond anything they could have anticipated.

Esta obra, inserta en el espacio de intersección entre la filosofía y las ciencias sociales, tiene por vocación explorar el perfil contradictorio de los pilares sobre los cuales se ha sostenido la modernidad occidental, para luego sondear el signo de sus implicaciones en el espectro cultural de la tardomodernidad a un doble nivel: la configuración psicopolítica de los nuevos agentes sociales y los señuelos traídos en la confección política de las nuevas subjetividades. Examina la proyección de unas ambivalencias estructurales ínsitas a la modernidad esclarecedoras de una bipolaridad de planos donde se mueve la acción de unas nuevas subjetividades, desde una indefinición en las directrices rectoras de los actores políticos (impolítica, movimientos sociales, ideología, utopía) hasta unas nacientes variantes de fetichización del yo (felicidad, creatividad, expresividad). Se compone de tres partes. En una primera se encara la naturaleza ambivalente de los cimientos sobre los cuales se ha asentado la modernidad occidental, así como los efectos consiguientes en la significación de la trama social derivados de esta ambivalencia. En una segunda se encara cómo los imaginarios estructuradores de la significación de la experiencia compartida por los actores sociales responden a una herencia cultural legada por la modernidad con sus contradicciones, dando así cuenta del asomo de unas reacciones alternativas a ella con una expresividad política de doble faz. This book explores what attracts people to aidwork and to what extent the promises of aidwork are fulfilled. 'Aidland' is a highly complex and heterogeneous context which includes many different occupations, forms of employment and organizations. Analysing the processes that lead to the involvement in development cooperation, emergency relief and human rights work and tracing the pathways into and through Aidland, the book addresses working and living conditions in Aidland, gender relations and inequality among aid personnel and what impact aidwork has on the life-courses of aidworkers. In order to capture the trajectories that lead to Aidland a biographical perspective is employed which reveals that boundary crossing between development cooperation, emergency relief and human rights is not unusual and that considering these fields as separate spheres might overlook important connections. Rich reflexive data is used to theorize about the often contradictory experiences of people working in aid whose careers are shaped by geo-politics, changing priorities of donors and a changing composition of the aid sector. Exploring the life worlds of people working in aid, this book contributes to the emerging sociology and anthropology of aidwork and will be of interest to professionals and researchers in humanitarian and development studies, sociology, anthropology, political science and international relations, international social work and social psychology.
