Weather forecasting and climatology have traditionally been users of the world's fastest supercomputers. The recent emergence of massively parallel supercomputers as likely successors to current vector supercomputers has created an acute need to convert weather and climate models to suit parallel supercomputers with thousands of processors. Several major efforts are underway worldwide to accomplish this. ECMWF has established itself as the central venue for bringing together operational weather forecasters, climate researchers and parallel computer manufacturers to share their experience on these efforts every second year. The recent dramatic developments in supercomputer manufacturing have made the 1992 ECMWF Workshop timelier than before.

UNDERSTANDING PARALLEL SUPERCOMPUTING is an exhaustive, applications-oriented survey of the world's largest and fastest computers. Beginning with the evolution of parallel supercomputing technology in recent history, author R. Michael Hord goes on to illustrate architectural concepts and implementations at the very center of today's cutting-edge technology. Topics featured include: technology benefits and drawbacks, software tools and programming languages, major programming concepts, sample parallel programs, algorithmic methods, both SIMD and MIMD architectures. This carefully written text will be of interest to engineers, scientists, and program managers involved in geologic exploration, aircraft design, image processing, weather modeling, operations, research, chemical synthesis, and medical applications. It will also be of practical use to computer specialists.

This volume contains papers presented at the NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop on "Software for Parallel Computation" held at the University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy, from June 22 to June 26, 1992. The purpose of the workshop was to evaluate the current state-of-the-art of the software for parallel computation, identify the main factors inhibiting practical applications of parallel computers and suggest possible remedies. In particular it focused on parallel software, programming tools, and practical experience of using parallel computers for solving demanding problems. Critical issues relative to the practical use of parallel computing included: portability, reusability and debugging, parallelization of sequential programs, construction of parallel algorithms, and performance of parallel programs and systems. In addition to NATO, the principal sponsor, the following organizations provided a generous support for the workshop: CERFACS, France, C.I.R.A., Italy, C.N.R., Italy, University of Calabria, Italy, ALENIA, Italy, The Boeing Company, U.S.A., CISE, Italy, ENEL - D.S.R., Italy, Alliant Computer Systems, Bull RN Sud, Italy, Convex Computer, Digital Equipment Corporation, Rewlett Packard, Meiko Scientific, U.K., PARSYTEC Computer, Germany, TELMAT Informatique, France, Thinking Machines Corporation.

The International Workshop on "The Use of Super computers in Theoretical Science" took place from July 30 till August 1, 1984, at the Conference Center of the "Priorij Corsendonk", close to the city of Antwerpen, Belgium. During the past decade computational science has developed itself to a third methodology besides the experimental and theoretical sciences. This remarkable evolution was only possible due to a drastic increase of the computational power of present day computers. Indeed, computational physics and chemistry as such is certainly not new, but it was only during the past ten years or so that realistic problems could be solved numerically to a sufficient degree of accuracy. During this workshop the state-of-the-art in high speed computation was presented by a team of lecturers who are well known for their competence in this field. It is a pleasure to thank several organizations and companies who made this workshop possible. First of all, the main sponsors: the Belgian National Science Found ation (NFWO-FNRS) and the "Universitaire Instelling Ant werpen". Next, the co-sponsors: Agfa-Gevaert N. V., Control Data Belgium and the Belgian Ministry of Education. Special thanks are due to Dr. P.E. Van Camp and Drs. H. Nachtegaele for the practical organization of this workshop. I would also like to thank Mrs. H. Evans for typing the manuscripts and for preparing the author and subject index. v Last but not least I express my gratitude to Mr.

Computer architecture deals with the physical configuration, logical structure, formats, protocols, and operational sequences for processing data, controlling the configuration, and controlling the operations over a computer. It also encompasses word lengths, instruction codes, and the interrelationships among the main parts of a computer or group of computers. This two-volume set offers a comprehensive coverage of the field of computer organization and architecture.
