In recent years there has been growing international focus on the importance of emerging and re-emerging arthropod-borne diseases in both human and veterinary medicine. Increasingly these diseases are being diagnosed and treated in veterinary practice. In this book the authors first discuss the overall significance of this group of diseases, plus arthropod biology and immunology, and current laboratory diagnostic methods, followed by individual chapters on each disease entity, grouped by causative organism (protozoan, bacterial, viral). Each chapter covers background etiology and epidemiology, including the role of wildlife species and zoonotic effects, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment. The book is illustrated throughout in color and contains photographs of clinical cases, hematology, cytology and gross and microscopic pathology. In short, the book provides an accessible guide to arthropod-borne infectious disease for veterinarians in practice and training.

Echinococcus and Echinococcosis Part A and B present a complete synthesis on what is known about the parasitic cestode echinococcus and the disease it causes, echinococcosis (Hydatid Disease), also demonstrating that in addition to its medical, veterinary, and economic significance, it is an intriguing biological phenomenon. Both parts build on the success of a previous volume, Echinococcus and Hydatid Disease, edited by R.C.A. Thompson and A.J. Lymbery, and published by CAB International, that details the major advances that have taken place since its release. As such, it remains the only comprehensive account that embraces virtually all aspects of echinococcus and the disease it causes. The links between laboratory knowledge and field applications are emphasized throughout the volumes. Consequently, research workers, teachers, students of parasitology, clinicians, and field workers will find this work an indispensable source of information. Presents the expertise of contributors who are renowned in the field Covers all aspects of cchinococcus and echinococcosis, from basic and applied biology, through diagnosis and control, to clinical aspects

This book provides in-depth insights into epidemic and emerging mycoses in various animal groups. The different categories of pathogens and outbreak fungi are discussed. In an introductory chapter, the reader will be provided basic information on fungal infections that are non-transmissible, infections from a common environmental source known as sapronoses, and zoophilic fungal pathogens in various animal species and populations, worldwide Chapter 2 details the vocabulary and terminology that is required in the scientific literature in order to maintain clarity of expression to the field of Mycology. Chapters 3 to 9 discuss epidemic mycoses with a reservoir in animals and occasional outbreaks, including dermatophytoses, coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, paracoccidioidomycosis, adiaspiromycosis and similar diseases, blastomycosis, and paracoccidioidomycosis ceti (lacaziosis/lobomycosis). Chapters 10 to 15 comprise emerging mycoses in animals that include feline sporotrichosis, lethargic crab disease, emergence of C. gattii in animals and zoonotic potential, white-nose syndrome in hibernating bats, chytridiomycosis in frogs and salamanders and aspergillosis in cats. The last chapter is about treatment possibilities, antifungal use in veterinary practice, and emergence of resistance. The book will address medical and veterinary mycologists, microbiologists, veterinarians, infectious disease specialists, epidemiologists, ecologists, public health scientists from academia and industry as well as graduate students, PhD students and postdocs in the field.

A significant number of diseases are carried by insects, ticks, mites and rodents, and these diseases are far more common than is often realised. New diseases are regularly discovered and are becoming increasingly widespread, in part due to increased global travel and possibly even climate change. In this exciting new volume Norman Gratz, former Director, Division of Vector Biology and Control, World Health Organisation, reviews the distribution of all currently identified vector and rodent-borne diseases in Europe, the USA and Canada. Each type of infection is presented by group, covering incidence and prevalence, costs and public health burdens. Basic vector biology and control is described in detail and an extensive bibliography is provided to aid readers seeking further information. With its comprehensive coverage and detail, this book is set to become the standard reference for anyone working on vector- and rodent-borne diseases in medical entomology, zoology, epidemiology and public health.

Veterinary Entomology written by R. Wall and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

Although usually treated as unified subject, in many respects the two components of what is broadly described as 'medical and veterinary is usual, the term entomology is entomology' are clearly distinct. As used loosely here to refer to both insects and arachnids. In medical entomology blood-feeding Diptera are of paramount importance, primarily as vectors of pathogenic disease. Most existing textbooks reflect this bias. However, in veterinary entomology ectoparasites such as the mites, fleas or dipteran agents of myiasis assume far greater prominence and the most important effects of their parasitic activity may be mechanical damage, pruritus, blood loss, myiasis, hypersensitivity and dermatitis, in addition to vector-borne pathogenic disease. Ectoparasite infestation of domestic and companion animals, therefore, has clinical consequences necessitating a distinct approach to diagnosis and control. The aim of this book is to introduce the behaviour, ecology, pathology and control of arthropod ectoparasites of domestic animals to students and practitioners of veterinary medicine, animal husbandry and applied biology. Since the book is directed primarily at the non-entomologist, some simplification of a number of the more involved entomological issues has been deemed necessary to improve the book's logical structure and comprehensibility, and keep its length within limits. A reading list is presented at the end of each chapter to act as a stepping-stone into the specialist literature.
