Este libro trata de recoger y ordenar una serie de reflexiones sobre los medios de comunicación, el trabajo de los periodistas, la influencia de los nuevos formatos y tecnologías, los debates que en algún momento se han podido generar y que han sido atropellados sin sacar las conclusiones adecuadas, los errores que apenas se señalaron o que el ritmo trepidante de los medios se encarga de que los olvidemos rápidamente y, por tanto, seguro se repetirán. También se señalan casos concretos, nombres y apellidos de periodistas, empresas, políticos, pues sólo si se apunta sin miedo ni complejos se puede aspirar a ganar la credibilidad en lo que se expone. A partir de materiales previos del autor (columnas, artículos, conferencias…) totalmente retrabajados y actualizados, el texto se ordena en cuatro bloques temáticos: «Modus operandi. El periodismo que sufrimos», «Qué hacen los gobiernos y parlamentos», «Redes y nuevas tecnologías» y«Hacia dónde vamos». Como sus títulos indican, se trata de repasar el panorama existente parándose en el análisis de algunos casos vividos, situar cuál es la responsabilidad de los legisladores en lo que está sucediendo, desvelar cómo las redes sociales y las nuevas tecnologías están influyendo en el periodismo actual y, por último, reflexionar sobre adónde va éste y en qué medida se puede influir en ello. Y no es fácil ir más allá de la denuncia, porque las posibles soluciones deberán ser discutidas y debatidas entre todos: periodistas, políticos, empresarios de la comunicación y, en general, una ciudadanía que es la poseedora del derecho a la información por encima de las empresas de medios y de los periodistas. Si este libro sirve para sembrar esas inquietudes e iniciar alguno de esos debates (porque son varios), habrá cumplido su misión.

Before news organizations began putting their content online, people got the news in print or on TV and almost always outside of the workplace. But nowadays, most of us keep an eye on the headlines from our desks at work, and we have become accustomed to instant access to a growing supply of constantly updated stories on the Web.
