Schools that are most successful in engaging parents and other family members in support of their children's learning look beyond traditional definitions of parent involvement--parent teacher organizations or signing report cards--to a broader conception of supporting families in activities outside of school that can encourage their children's' learning. This idea book is intended to assist educators, parents, and policy makers as they develop school-family partnerships, identifying and describing successful strategies used by 20 local Title I programs. Following an executive summary, the book notes resources for involving families in education, includes research supporting such partnerships, and describes how Title I encourages partnerships. Next, the book describes successful local approaches to family involvement in education, organized around strategies for overcoming common barriers to family involvement, including: (1) overcoming time and resource constraints; (2) providing information and training to parents and school staff; (3) restructuring schools to support family involvement; (4) bridging school-family differences; and (5) tapping external supports for partnerships. Finally, the book presents conclusions about establishing and sustaining partnerships, noting that at the same time that successful partnerships share accountability, specific stakeholders must assume individual responsibility, and that those schools that succeed in involving large numbers of parents invest energy in finding solutions for problems, not excuses. Four appendices present profiles of 10 successful partnerships, descriptions in table format of 20 successful local approaches, contact information for profiled partnership programs, and resources for building successful partnerships. Contains 13 references. (HTH)

What do we mean by family support? How can we assess the outcomes of family support services? What evidence is there to show which services are effective in supporting vulnerable children and their families? There is currently widespread interest in how best to support families and young children, especially those who are in danger of being excluded or marginalized. This timely book reviews the evidence on 'what works' in family support services, and describes some of the problems and issues that arise when evaluating social welfare provision in general and family support services in particular. Covering ten key areas such as family centres, parenting education and services for disabled children, this book summarises evidence-based findings from research studies in the UK and the USA and provides an extensive bibliography for those wishing to follow up topics in further detail. It will provide an invaluable resource for Sure Start co-ordinators, children's services managers, providers of early years services and all those concerned with planning or monitoring provision to support young children and their families. It will also be of interest to lecturers and students of child welfare and education.

Citizenship Revisited written by Peter Herrmann and has been published by Nova Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Political Science categories.

Strangely, citizenship has usually been considered as a matter of interest when it is questioned or even withheld. The other way round, usually citizenship is taken for granted 'as it is', not being defined as such. In consequence we find only a negative definition rather than a clear way of spelling out the meaning. As globalisation spreads and deepens, the question of citizenship becomes crucial for society. It is already possible to see changes in voting patterns in such a country as France due to its immigration policies. This has long been the case in America as well, and is being felt there yet again by the effects of the citizenships of its newest immigrants. The contributions in this volumes are dealing with different aspects of defining citizenship -- though not necessarily conceptualising it as such, i.e. under this term. These are burning questions which this book explores in this explosive national and international issue. Contents: Introduction; Citizenship Revisited: Threats and Opportunities of Shifting Boundaries; Globalisation as Seen from the Local Level; Self-Improved Citizens: Citizenship, Social Inclusion and the Self in the Politics of Welfare; Citizen Partici
