The smoking uptake process appears to begin between the ages of 10-14 years. Because parents are the primary agents of socialization during childhood, public health researchers have begun to examine parental influences that may potentially modify influences on adolescents to smoke. Understanding how parental influences relate to adolescent experimentation can facilitate the development of comprehensive programs that involve parents directly in prevention efforts. The primary objective of this research was to examine parental influences other than parental smoking on the adolescent transition from never-smoking to experimentation in a representative sample. Specifically, the smoking behavior of California adolescents (n = 1,644), who had not smoked at age 12-14 years in 1996, was measured at age 15-17 years in 1999. Baseline measures were used to predict experimentation by follow-up, and the relation of parental influences with experimentation by follow-up was examined. Authoritative parenting, comprised of high levels of parental responsiveness and demandingness, is the most highly beneficial type of parenting described in the socialization literature. Measures of parental responsiveness and demandingness were each associated with adolescent experimentation by follow-up. Results indicated that adolescents with authoritative parents were less likely to start smoking than were others. Additionally, authoritative parenting classification at age 15 to 17 years likely reflects a parental behavioral pattern in previous years. While authoritative parenting reduced the risk of future smoking in adolescent never smokers, it did not protect the adolescent from the persuasive influence of tobacco industry advertising and promotions. Receptivity to tobacco promotions was the strongest predictor of which adolescents experimented when parents were more authoritative. Exposure to smokers among best friends and susceptibility to smoking were important influences on smoking for adolescents with more authoritative parenting as well as for those with less authoritative parenting. The importance of adolescent smoking prevention programs that include a parenting component has been identified. Parental responsiveness, monitoring and limit-setting, and the countering of tobacco marketing merit consideration for intervention strategies. To maximize the efficacy of such strategies, longitudinal research is needed on parenting that takes into consideration the cultural specificity of parenting and the different phases of the uptake process.

The general purpose of this study was to examine multiple sources of parental influences on adolescents' physical activity motivation and behavior using Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985, 1991) as the main theoretical framework. More specifically, this study attempted to develop and verify a Model of Parental Influences in the context of physical activity. It was hypothesized that the predicted relationships in the model would be significant and in the expected direction. A questionnaire, composed of several validated scales, that assessed: physical activity motivation, physical activity behavior and perceptions of parental influence, was administered to 829 ninth grade physical education students from the Ottawa, Canada region. Results from a recursive path analysis consisting of two multiple regressions revealed that perceived parental motivation towards physical activity, perceived parental involvement in their physical activities and perceived parental autonomy support in the context of physical activity significantly influenced adolescents' physical activity motivation. Results also revealed that perceived parental expectations with regards to physical activity and adolescents' physical activity motivation were significant predictors of their physical activity behavior. The future of the world is in proper upbringing of the youths and when the foundation is destroyed, it lives a purposeless generation that seeks for a means to close the void created in them which brings about introduction to drugs, alcohol, prostitution, pornography and masturbation, theft, rebellion and so on. Parent are the first educator of a child but many of them have left those duties to their nannies and student teachers, of which, some of these outlets are not well equipped to instill the right knowledge need for a futuristic generation. This review summarizes two decades of research about family especially parental influences on the risk of adolescent pregnancy. It draws on several previous summaries of family influences on adolescent sexual behavior or pregnancy risk and also reviews data from the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health. Family influences range from hereditary or biological transmission of potentially important characteristics, to the contextual and structural features of families, to the everyday practices of parenting. Although each of these domains influences the risk of adolescent pregnancy, this review focuses primarily on parent/child relations even though other adults beyond parents (especially extended family members) influence pregnancy risk for some adolescents. After a discussion of parent-child relationships, this review then addresses family contextual influences on the risk of adolescent pregnancy. The final section touches briefly on some of the important biological influences on pregnancy risks. As broad as this review of family influences may seem, it is important to acknowledge that other areas of research are omitted, such as the substantial research about the effects of race/ethnicity, religion, and differential association with peers on adolescent sexual behavior.

This M.S. report provides an evaluative review of research on parental influences on adolescent sexual decision-making. Data show that a significant proportion of never-married female and male teens (ages 15-19) have had sexual intercourse at least once. Adolescent decisions on sexuality and possible consequences such as pregnancy or sexually-transmitted diseases may have profound personal and social impacts. Theoretical and empirical domains of parental influence are reviewed, including communication, morality, family structure and context, parental control, as well as the role of media. This review shows that adolescent sexuality has changed over time due to socio-historical factors and that parents continue to have an influence on their children0́9s decision-making abilities. Implications for applied professionals and researchers are discussed.

Parents are central to adolescents' lives and extensive research shows that parents can influence adolescent and young adults' sexual decision-making in positive ways. However, the ability of interventions to help parents influence their children's sexual health has been modest. In many cases, interventions for parents have not been guided by theory or strong research and many interventions for parents are based on only a general sense that more communication between parents and their children on topics related to sexuality is helpful. Currently, millions of dollars in public funding in the United States are designated for programs to reduce teen pregnancy and prevent sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, many foundations and individuals contribute significant funds to organizations that implement programs that strive to improve adolescent sexual health. Increasingly, there is an interest in including program components for parents in order to help them to positively influence their teens' sexual decision-making.
