Authors who, from today's perspective and in the face of current research, were far ahead of their time were often misunderstood or simply ignored by their contemporaries. And even if an excerpt from an extensive work is always subjective, it still offers a middle ground between subsuming under a catchphrase on the one hand, and intensive preoccupation with the work on the other. Table of Contents Introduction Fear Caused by Mortality Rate Statistics Online The World Is Such a Dangerous Place… Who Is Responsible for a Child’s Safety? Where Has Your Imagination Gone? Brain Boosters? Motor Skills and Obesity Manual Competence and Dexterity Protection against Potential Body Harm Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction A friend of mine wanted to know why I was writing a book on how not to be an overprotective parent, because according to her, the first priority of a parent, especially if he is the responsible person is to make sure that the child is protected, cherished, taken care of, physically, mentally, and emotionally, by the adults around it. A lot of times, the parents do not know when to let go, even when they are in their 60s and 70s, because for them, the children who are in the 40s and 50s are still fledglings in need of their parents' guidance! This book is for all of those parents, who are really afraid of letting their children grow up on their own. Protect and cherish and coddle them, from the harsh, cruel, cruel world outside, and in some ways give them everything, which they never had as children. For them, this is the expression of love and this is the way they can consider themselves to be good parents. A couple of days ago, I saw a youngster, of a really good, well educated, highly placed, financially very secure family being arrested by the police, because he had decided to do something illegal, just for the fun of it. His father happened to tell me, “how could my son do this to me, I never expected it of him, I have given him everything, he is a brilliant boy, his mother and I made sure that he never wanted for anything, since he was a baby, and gave in to all his demands. We protected him throughout his life against the realities of our own harsh childhoods.” This feeling of hurt and betrayal is natural in any parent, who is shocked at the idea of a supposedly well brought up child doing something unconventional, and unacceptable in the eyes of society. When the child was asked by the lawyer, the reason why he decided to try his hand at a little blatant holding up of a jewelry store, he said, that he had never had any excitement in his life. So he wanted to see what it felt like, living on the wild side, instead of living like a mini prototype carbon copy of his so good, so sober, so law-abiding, so traditional, so conventional, so everything parents, hidebound and constricted with their ideas of how a child should be brought up. A friend of mine told me that the law and order situation in her particular city was such, that she was always afraid of her kids being kidnapped. Do you know the statistics against that happening, anywhere in the world today? 0.01%. That is true. The same way as your kid dying in a road accident can be about 1 in 280,000. That is because, even though there are very frightening statistics all over the Internet, talking about road accidents and statistics and kidnapping and all that jazz, most of them are not based on real data.

Handbook Of Parenting written by Marc H. Bornstein and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-08 with Family & Relationships categories.

This highly anticipated third edition of the Handbook of Parenting brings together an array of field-leading experts who have worked in different ways toward understanding the many diverse aspects of parenting. Contributors to the Handbook look to the most recent research and thinking to shed light on topics every parent, professional, and policymaker wonders about. Parenting is a perennially "hot" topic. After all, everyone who has ever lived has been parented, and the vast majority of people become parents themselves. No wonder bookstores house shelves of "how-to" parenting books and magazine racks in pharmacies and airports overflow with periodicals that feature parenting advice. However, almost none of these is evidence-based. The Handbook of Parenting is. Period. Each chapter has been written to be read and absorbed in a single sitting, and includes historical considerations of the topic, a discussion of central issues and theory, a review of classical and modern research, and forecasts of future directions of theory and research. Together, the five volumes in the Handbook cover Children and Parenting, the Biology and Ecology of Parenting, Being and Becoming a Parent, Social Conditions and Applied Parenting, and the Practice of Parenting. Volume 1, Children and Parenting, considers parenthood as a functional status in the life cycle: Parents protect, nurture, and teach their progeny, even if human development is more dynamic than can be determined by parental caregiving alone. Volume 1 of the Handbook of Parenting begins with chapters concerned with how children influence parenting. Notable are their more obvious characteristics, like child age or developmental stage; but subtler ones, like child gender, physical state, temperament, mental ability, and other individual-differences factors, are also instrumental. The chapters in Part I, on Parenting across the Lifespan, discuss the unique rewards and special demands of parenting children of different ages and stages – infants, toddlers, youngsters in middle childhood, and adolescents—as well as the modern notion of parent-child relationships in emerging adulthood, adulthood, and old age. The chapters in Part II, on Parenting Children of Varying Status, discuss common issues associated with parenting children of different genders and temperaments as well as unique situations of parenting adopted and foster children and children with a variety of special needs, such as those with extreme talent, born preterm, who are socially withdrawn or aggressive, or who fall on the autistic spectrum, manifest intellectual disabilities, or suffer a chronic health condition.

Parental Vigilant Care written by Haim Omer and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-26 with Psychology categories.

This volume presents the concept of vigilant care as a protective and non-intrusive parental attitude to risky behaviors of children and adolescents. The effective component in vigilant care is not control, but parental presence. Vigilant care is a flexible attitude in which parents shift between levels of open attention, focused attention, and protective action, according to the alarm signals they detect. The author presents a detailed theoretical, empirical, and clinical rationale for the model that deals with potentially problematic parental attitudes or parent-child processes such as overparenting, psychological control, disregard of legitimate personal domains or of the child's need for self-determination, parent-child mutual distancing, and escalation.
