Advances in medical care and treatment options have extended the life expectancy of millions of youths with chronic conditions. These changes in prognosis have led many teens to not only survive but also thrive in adulthood. However, less is known about how parents and youth prepare for adulthood, or about the beliefs they have around becoming an adult with a chronic condition. What are parents thinking about as they teach their children to manage their condition? Findings from a mixed-method study are used to explore the unique beliefs and behaviors of parents raising a child with a chronic condition in greater depth. Understanding the beliefs, worries, and behaviors of parents has major implications for those providing care to them. This book provides healthcare professionals with a more nuanced way to think about what families are doing in order to provide more effective resources and support to those families.

This book focuses on young people (12-25 years old) growing up with a chronic somatic condition and/or physical disability, facing different challenges during their transition to adulthood and to adult healthcare services. Becoming an adult often proves extra challenging for them, because the adaptive tasks related to living with a chronic condition can clash with developmental milestones. Finding a good balance and integrating these tasks in daily life is also referred to as self-management. This book addresses self-management and empowerment of young people with chronic conditions as well as the Positive Youth Development concept. It elaborates on theories and approaches and offers a complete overview of self-management interventions for young people with chronic conditions, emphasizing on the tasks of medical, emotion and role management. It also elaborates on the roles and tasks of professionals, as well as the patient-provider relationship; the shifting roles between young people and their parents and the role of peer support. This book is unique in its broad view on self-management, i.e. it goes beyond medical management and focuses on young people achieving their maximum potential and a good quality of life. Furthermore, the book employs a positive youth development approach, focusing on empowerment and growth rather than problems or issues. It offers an overview of the state-of-the-art and evidence concerning self-management support for young people with various chronic conditions. As such it is of benefit for all healthcare professionals working in care for young people, but also for researchers interested in this topic.

Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

For adolescents with chronic health conditions, developing self-management abilities is an ongoing process that may affect their future health outcomes. Parents are inextricably involved in this process and have the opportunity to act as key players in promoting self-management as youth progress towards becoming young adults. The aim of this study was to understand the support needs of parents working to promote self-management in their adolescent children with chronic health conditions, and to elaborate on a previously published Ecological Framework for transitioning to adult healthcare. Five major themes were identified: (1) Ease of navigating health systems, (2) Education on adolescent development, (3) Coaching for parents and adolescents on communication strategies and self-management skills, (4) Connecting parents and adolescents with peer support, and (5) Clinical strategies to increase the child’s involvement in medical care. Using these findings, we provide specific recommendations for future research and program development at both clinical and health system levels to support parents in promoting self-management in their adolescent children.
