This book contains the lectures delivered at the Second Paris Cosmology Colloquium (second ‘Journée Cosmologie’) held at the Observatoire de Paris from June 2 to 4, 1994.[The first ‘Journée Cosmologie’ was held from May 18 to 19, 1993.]The purpose of these meetings is to cover selected topics of high current interest in the interplay between cosmology and fundamental physics and to allow easy and fruitful mutual contacts and communication. The main aim is to put in contact fundamental theoretical physics (including string theory) with real physical problems that arise in the study of the universe. The Paris Cosmology Colloguia are informal meetings which bring together physicists, astrophysicists and astronomers.Topics covered in the Second Paris Cosmology Colloquium included: fundamental strings and cosmic strings in cosmology, evolution out of the equilibrium of quantum fields in primordial cosmology, dark matter, as well as other subjects of high current interest related to black holes and quantum gravity.Sessions in the 1994 meeting lasted for three days leaving time for private discussions and for enjoying the beautiful parisian campus of the Observatoire de Paris (built on orders from Colbert and to plans by Claude Perrault from 1667 to 1672). Sessions took place at the ‘Salle du Conseil’ in the historic Perrault building under the portraits of Laplace, Le Verrier, Lalande, Arago, Delambre and Louis XIV.

Constructing Gardens Cultivating The City written by Amanda Shoaf Vincent and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-16 with Architecture categories.

Constructing Gardens, Cultivating the City is the first cultural history of major new parks developed in Paris in the late twentieth century, as part of the city's program of adaptive reuse of industrial spaces. Thanks to laws that gave the city more political autonomy, Paris's local government launched a campaign of park creation in the late 1970s that continued to the turn of the millennium. The parks in this book represent this campaign and illustrate different facets of their cultural and historical context. Archival research, interviews, and analyses of the parks reveal how postmodern debates about urban planning, the historic city, public space, and nature's presence in an urban setting influenced their designs. In sum, the city adopted the garden as a model for public parks, investing in complex, richly symbolic and representational spaces. These parks were intended to represent contemporary twists on traditional designs and serve local residents as much as they would contribute to Paris's role as a world city. The parks' development process often included points of conflict, pointing to differing views on what Parisian space should represent and fundamental contradictions between the characteristics of public space and the garden as it is traditionally defined. These parks demonstrate the ongoing cultivation of the city over time, in which transformed sites not only fulfil new functions but also engage with history and their surroundings to create new meaning. They stand for landscape as a form of signifying cultural production that directly engages with other art forms and ways of knowing. Just as the Luxembourg Gardens, the Tuileries, and the Buttes-Chaumont parks exemplify their eras' cultural dynamics, such parks as the Jardin Atlantique, Parc André-Citroën, and the Jardin des Halles express contemporary French culture within the archetypal space of their era, the city. Finally, they point the way to current trends in landscape architecture, such as citizen gardening and ecological initiatives.

Modernising Post War France written by Nicholas Bullock and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-22 with Architecture categories.

This book is about the role played by architects, engineers and planners in transforming France during the three post-war decades of growing prosperity, a period when modernisation was a central priority of the state, promising a way forward from the shame of defeat in 1940 to a place at the centre of the new Europe. The first part of the book examines the scale of transformation, showing how architecture and urbanism both served the cause of modernisation and shaped the identity of the new France. Mainstream modernism was co-opted to the service of the state, from major public buildings to Gaullist plans for the transformation of Paris to establish the city as the ‘capital’ of Europe. By contrast, the second part of the book explores the critique of state-sponsored modernisation by radical architects from Le Corbusier to the young Turks of the 1960s such as Georges Candilis and the students who attacked the banality of mainstream modernism and its inability to address the growing problems of France’s cities. Following May 1968, the Beaux-Arts was closed, the Grand Prix de Rome, symbol of the old order, abolished – for a while the establishment might continue as before, but progressive architecture was set on a new course. Beautifully illustrated and written to be accessible to all, the book sets the discussion of architecture and urbanism in its social, political and economic contexts. As such, it will appeal both to students and scholars of the history of architecture and urbanism and to those with a wider interest in France’s post-war history.
