QUANDO NADA É O QUE PARECE SER. Nessa tarde, enquanto caminhávamos até a paragem do ônibus, eu tinha a sensação de que todos que por mim, passavam, sabiam o que estava acontecer, olhavam para mim, com ar de coitadinho, como se estivesse a ser levado por um negociante. O sol já estava baixinho quando chegamos à rodoviária, fomos à banca de revistas e a minha mãe comprou-me duas bandas desenhadas do «homem-aranha», o que já estava prometido há quase um ano, fiquei numa felicidade que não cabia em mim. Deixou-me sentado no banco em frente aos guichés de vendas e foi lá falar com um vendedor de bilhetes. Eu fiquei ali a ler, era tudo que eu mais queria, adorava livros de banda desenhada, embora houvesse lido pouquíssimos na biblioteca da escola. Quando dei por mim e olhei para o guiché a minha mãe já não estava lá, olhei para todos os lados e nada, entrei em várias cafetarias que havia ali naquela rodoviária e nada. Fui ao guiché onde ela havia estado e perguntei ao vendedor pela minha mãe, ao que respondeu que ela apenas perguntou à que horas chegava o ônibus de Piracicaba e de seguida, saiu. Entrei em pânico passado algum tempo, não tínhamos telefone, não sabia o caminho de volta e estávamos num lugar onde nunca fui antes. Comecei a chorar compulsivamente de medo, já era noite e aquele escuro tornava tudo maior, andei por ali a perguntar às pessoas se não tinham visto a minha mãe, dava-lhes as suas características, tinha esperança que alguém me dissesse que ela estava algures, mas que voltava logo. Mas ninguém sabia dela, encostei-me a um canto, protegendo as minhas costas do frio que começava a fazer e deixei-me ficar por ali, a olhar as pessoas que chegavam e partiam. Fiquei mesmo de frente às entradas e saídas na esperança de que talvez alguém me pudesse reconhecer, ou saber de quem eu era filho e levar-me de volta, mas passou muito tempo e ninguém falou comigo, nem mesmo os polícias que muitas vezes me viram ali sentado e nada disseram. Después de la Guerra Civil Española, las familias que aparecen en estos relatos, pasaron por infinidad de dificultades para salir adelante. Hacían trabajos que hoy no se entenderían. Habían aprendido que lo malo de aquella contienda no les llevaría a ningún sitio bueno. Eligieron el camino recto de la vida. De esta generación nació otra con el mismo espíritu de superación y con grandes ilusiones. Siempre buscando un futuro de paz y trabajo para el bien general. No tenían más ambición que obtener a base de esfuerzos y sacrificio lo que creían que en un futuro les reportaría paz y felicidad. La guerra trajo consigo una serie de injusticias, el robo, la rapiña, el abuso de las mujeres y un sin fin de enfermedades que tardó mucho tiempo en desaparecer, además de que gran parte de los que perdieron, mal llamados “rojos”, tuvieron que refugiarse en las Sierras para salvar sus vidas. Más tarde serian perseguidos hasta su desaparición. A estos huidos se les llamaban “maquis” o bandoleros según el lugar donde se establecían. El hambre trajo tras de sí, por la contienda habida, la prostitución que se extendió como un reguero de pólvora que había que ocultar para evitar más vergüenzas que las ya padecidas. Algunos arrieros, aprovecharon la situación para mezclarse con los huidos en las sierras proporcionándoles alimentos, armas, municiones, animales y todo lo necesario para su subsistencia. El cobro lo obtenían de los atracos que frecuentemente efectuaban los huidos en los caminos mas cercanos a las montañas en donde se ocultaban. Cada intérprete tiene su historia particular, en la que en algunos momentos se entremezclan, en ellas hay mas alegrías que tristezas, hay compasión, amor y sacrificio. Esta novela se desarrolla en las provincias de Córdoba, Málaga, la capital del Reino, además de las ciudades de Múnich, Londres y Vancouver en Canadá. El esfuerzo y el trabajo de esta generación dio como resultado paz y estabilidad durante muchos años.
