Cri du coeur patriotique, elle magnifie aussi on ne peut mieux le « rêve américain ». Celui-ci est-il accessible à toutes les personnes qui peuplent le territoire? En principe, oui, depuis les amendements apportés en ce sens à la Constitution de 1787. De facto, la route est infiniment plus facile si l’on a eu l’immense chance d’appartenir par la naissance à la « bonne » race, celle de Francis Scott Key. La divergence entre le principe démocratique d’égalité et ce qui se donne à voir dans la pratique a inspiré notre sous-titre : le paradoxe racial. Dans une perspective sociologique et non pas d’abord littéraire, ce livre examine l’œuvre romanesque courageusement bâtie par les écrivains africains américains, des hommes et des femmes, depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle jusqu’à nos jours. Avec leur plume, ces ouvriers de l’imaginaire s’attaquent d’entrée de jeu à l’arbitraire de la stigmatisation raciale, font tout pour réduire les effets du paradoxe ci-dessus et aider leur minorité à pouvoir légitimement participer au « rêve américain ». La sociologie étatsunienne n'existe pas au singulier. Deux grands savoirs s'y côtoient. Le plus ancien est anglo-saxon. The protagonists have to realize that their dreams will never become fulfilled and, consequently, become disillusioned and corrupted by their unhealthy environment. John Dos Passos describes a City that becomes a modern Babylon; it is fragmented and on its way to greed, capitalism and corruption. The New York of Stephen Crane's Maggie Johnson and Edith Wharton's Lily Bart is like a gigantic deterministic cage that denies every attempt of escape. Moreover, the metaphysical novel 'City of Glass' by Paul Auster does not show any sign of the promised life in wealth and freedom, but rather a city that is split into pieces, ruled by chance and misunderstandings. The city literally dehumanizes its inhabitants as they are dazzled by its addictive quality.
