An installation by Claudio Parmiggiani, one of Itlay's seminal modern artists, in the Chapelle des Brigittines in Brussels. Founded in 1663 by the order of St Saviour, the Chapelle des Brigittines is one of the most prestigious places today in Brussels for contemporary art. Claudio Parmiggiani's installation L'Isola del Silenzio (The Island of Silence) has been sited here: a magnificent Lombard bell in bronze, placed on the floor in front of an irregular pyramid of books, piled up one against the other like the stones of an old building, in place of the altar. The artist's taste for allegory, the close relationship between space and art work, the silence, the ashes and dust settling on the paper, all create a psychological and ethical place characterised by angst and melancholy, but also a symbolically resistant rock that silently opposes the devastation of culture. The silent shape of the bell now stands where the choir once sang in harmony; where there was once a library with its treasury of knowledge and learning, a pile of useless paper remains. Parmiggiani's cry of alarm and pain is directed, with hope, towards more attentive and sensitive souls. Text in French and Flemish. 8 colour 41 b/w illustrations

Offering previously unpublished texts by Bruno Corà, Andrea Cortellessa and Philippe Dagen, the catalog traces the stages of the artistic research of Parmiggiani, who was born in Luzzara in 1943 and is recognized as one of the leading artists on the Italian and international art scene. The exhibition offers a selection of works conceived in situ by the artist. Made with fire, dust and smoke, his first Delocazioni were born in the 1970s in Modena as a reflection on absence, shadow and trace. The catalog is enriched with texts from his work-books published since 1970, quotations from the artist, photos from the exhibition and archival images in collaboration with Parmiggiani's studio.

L'ouvrage présente une série de dessins de l'artiste exposés au Château d'Ô de Montpellier à partir du 14 mars 2003.Artiste italien né en 1943, Claudio Parmiggiani impose dans l'univers artistique un langage poétique universel sans se soucier des modes éphémères qui traversent son temps. Qu'il use pour la réalisation de ses œuvres du mercure ou de l'or, de la terre ou du fer, de la poussière ou de la suie, il agit en véritable alchimiste, évoluant du simple au sublime, de l'élémentaire au métaphysique. Claudio Parmiggiani réalise des Delocazione depuis 1970. A Montpellier, il investit la majestueuse salle de lecture de l'ancienne bibliothèque municipale. Aujourd'hui désaffectée, cette pièce, qui a vu passer des générations d'étudiants et de chercheurs, attend son incorporation au sein du futur musée Fabre. L'artiste y réalise une installation monumentale dont l'envergure répond au caractère éphémère de la technique utilisée, les matériaux n'étant rien d'autre que des grains de poussière de fumée. Les Delocazione sont un commentaire sur l'absence. Les murs couverts de grisaille donnent à voir les fantômes d'un autre temps et permettent à la mémoire de s'incarner dans les lieux mêmes où l'activité humaine a cédé la place au vide et au silence. L'ouvrage présente l'installation achevée et sa mise en œuvre. Le texte de Sylvain Amic, conservateur du musée Fabre, son entretien avec l'artiste, ainsi que les documents témoignant de la réalisation de la Delocazione plongent le lecteur dans l'instant privilégié de la création puis dans le temps suspendu de l'œuvre.
