This sixth volume of Advances in Criminological Theory is testimony to a resurgent interest in anomie-strain theory, which began in the mid- 1980s and continues unabated. Contributors focus on the new body of empirical research and theorizing that has been added to the anomie tradition that extends from Durkheim to Merton. The first section is a major, 75-page statement by Robert K. Merton, examining the development of the anomie-and-opportunity-structure paradigm and its significance to criminology., The Legacy of Anomie Theoy assesses the theory's continuing usefulness, explains the relevance of Merton's concept of goals/means disparity as a psychological mechanism in the explanation of delinquency, and compares strain theory with social control theory. A macrosociological theoretical formulation is used to explain the association between societal development and crime rates. In other chapters, anomie is used to explain white-collar crime and to explore the symbiotic relationship between Chinese gangs and adult criminal organizations within the cultural, economic, and political context of the American-Chinese community.

What role do their respective police systems play in the very different crime rates of Japan and the United States? This study draws on direct observation of Japanese police practices combined with interviews of police officials, criminal justice practitioners, legal scholars, and private citizens. It compares many Japanese police practices side by side with U.S. police practices, and places the role of the police in the broader cultural and historical Japanese framework.

Because people’s contact with the criminal justice system comes in different shapes and forms, scholars are now broadening their analytical scope and examining the overall repercussions of criminal justice contact on families of offenders. Compared to Western societies, Japan is known for its lower crime rates and more pronounced use of informal social control. Thus, it offers a useful research site for examining how families in a low-crime society experience criminal justice contact and how they function as an integral part of the nation’s crime control mechanism. This book considers the role of the family in the lives of offenders and the criminal justice system in Japan. Looking particularly at gender and patriarchal power relations, it reveals how cultural notions of femininity prompt the criminal justice system to rely on women as its proxy. This book explores how families of offenders often step in to fill the voids left by criminal justice institutions and social services to provide offenders with all-inclusive care. The burden of supervising and rehabilitating offenders on top of the expectation to atone for the crimes also renders families ambivalent and ashamed. Whereas the state and criminal justice authorities tend to see offenders’ families as a crucial resource for prisoner reentry, this book highlights the necessity for addressing families’ needs before automatically assuming their support. It also pushes the boundaries of feminist criminology by showing how women can be affected by male criminality and male-dominated criminal justice institutions, other than as victims and offenders. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, gender studies, Japanese culture and all those interested in learning more about the criminal justice system in Japan.

Linking Community And Corrections In Japan written by Elmer Hubert Johnson and has been published by SIU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.

COMPLETING ELMER H. JOHNSON'S impressive three-volume examination of corrections in Japan, Linking Community and Corrections in Japan (written with the assistance of Carol H. Johnson) focuses on the Rehabilitation Bureau's responsibilities regarding probation, parole, and aftercare as well as the Correction Bureau's role in Japan's version of community-oriented corrections. In Linking Community and Corrections in Japan, Johnson first outlines the tasks of the Rehabilitation Bureau, then turns to historic and contemporary views of community and corrections. In discussions of the probation and parole system for both adults and juveniles, he describes in detail the Japanese version of supervision and the return of prisoners to the community. One strength of this study is Johnson's impartiality. As an investigator, he functions as a "friend of the court", an adviser who is free to conduct an objective pursuit of the fundamental strengths and shortcomings of the Japanese prison system. He also follows the Foucauldian dictum: "With the prisons there would be no sense of limiting oneself to discourses about prisons; just as important are the discourses which arise within the prison, the decisions and regulations which are among its constituent elements, its means of functioning, along with its strategies". Johnson provides sixty tables, two charts, and nineteen black-and-white illustrations.

Criminologist Johnson is one of the few westerners to have access to Japanese prisons. His account pivots on the characteristics of the major elements, how personnel carry out their responsibilities, and why duties and activities are carried out in a particular way. He explores cultural reasons for the low number of convicted criminals going to prison, and attributes the low degree of prison violence to the industrial operations of adult prisons and the education, vocational training, and counseling in juvenile prisons. Whilst they retain a recognisable common core, probation systems round the world are enormously varied, and many are in a state of rapid change. Probation Round the World is a study of probation in ten countries, ranging from the well-resourced and heavily professionalised services of Britain and the old Commonwealth to the reliance on lay-supervisors in Japan and the community-based system which has recently been set up in Papua new Guinea. Probation Round the World resulted from collaborative research conducted by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the British Home Office. The first part of the book comprises a review of the development and convergence of probation within the Civil Law and Common Law traditions. The second part describes the origins and functions of systems in the ten countries, drawing out salient differences and similarities. It will provide invaluable reading for students of criminal justice and criminology and for professionals working in probation managment and government.

Criminology And Criminal Justice Systems Of The World written by Peter O. Nwankwo and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Law categories.

Professor Peter Nwankwo argues based on this textbook volume I, that the world has been turned into a global village, and that we have no reason(s) to ignore the awareness of what is going on in other countries of the world. This textbook "Criminology and criminal Justice System of the world: A comparative perspective" is a unique text, not because of its title, but because it contains what will ever be needed for the undergraduate and graduate students in the field of Criminology and Criminal Justice, especially those taking a course in Comparative Criminal Justice. The text is prodigious and profusely descriptive, explored, and explained by researching the police, the court systems, corrections or prisons, including Juvenile Justice Systems and Crime Statistics in the following countries: United States of America, china, Saudi Arabia, Japan, The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Haiti, Botswana, Philippines, Uganda, and Israel. It is worthy to note that the United States of America had too much information, so it was necessary to split it into two chapters i.e. chapter one, and chapter two. Additionally, The Netherlands was also split into two chapters thus: Chapters 6 & 7: The overall Chapters in this Volume I are thirteen. VOLUME II Volume two of this text contains twenty four chapters and over 24 countries were researched and included as follows, and will be published in a few in a few months .The countries are: Nigeria, Norway, Northern Ireland, England and Wales, Estonia, Ethiopia, Egypt, South America, Mauritania, Jamaica, Iraq, Dominican Republic, Turkey, South Africa, Russia, Kenya, Romania, Congo, Germany, France, Cameroon, Ghana and Denmark. No matter the adversities of the readers and purchasers, I do strongly advice that you order these two volumes together, when the later would be available on the internet or through the publishers.
