To perform well and persist at universities, students need to feel socially and academically integrated. Many universities have instituted learning communities to promote both types of involvement. I explore whether participants in learning communities develop a greater sense of community in the classroom and the university than non-participants. My sample consists of 273 first year students in 31 small seminar classes in a variety of disciplines. My comparison group is 73 first-year students taking introductory sociology courses. I also control for the effects of race, gender, family income, residence type and course subject. This study represents one of the many ways that sociology can contribute to the understanding of college student behavior.

The Influence Of Sense Of Community On The Relationship Between Community Participation And Recovery For Individuals With Serious Mental Illnesses written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Community mental health services categories.

The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 launched the deinstitutionalization movement, whereby individuals with serious mental illnesses were released from psychiatric hospitals and began living and receiving mental health care in the community (Carling, 1995). However, these actions have not necessarily integrated those individuals into all aspects of community life (Dewees, Pulice, & McCormick, 1996). This is unfortunate because people with serious mental illnesses frequently report that community integration is not only important to them, but that it also aids in reducing symptoms and promoting recovery (Townley, 2015). Although past research suggests that receiving mental health care in the community has a positive impact on symptom management, the influence of other community factors (e.g., sense of community, community participation) has yet to be fully explored (Segal, Silverman, & Temkin, 2010). Furthermore, there is lack of understanding as to how these community factors influence other aspects of recovery, such as mental and physical health. As such, the goal of the current study is to better understand the association between community participation and recovery by investigating sense of community as a potential mediating factor between community participation, psychological distress, mental health, and physical health. Data were collected from 300 adults with serious mental illnesses utilizing community mental health services in the United States. Results indicated that sense of community partially mediated the association between community participation and mental health, as well as psychological distress, and fully mediated the association between community participation and physical health. Implications include contributing to the current knowledge base about the role of community factors in recovery and informing future interventions aimed at promoting community integration of adults with serious mental illnesses.

Urban Renewal Community And Participation written by Julie Clark and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-02 with Science categories.

This edited collection investigates the human dimension of urban renewal, using a range of case studies from Africa, Asia, Europe, India and North America, to explore how the conception and delivery of regeneration initiatives can strengthen or undermine local communities. Ultimately aiming to understand how urban residents can successfully influence or manage change in their own communities, contributing authors interrogate the complex relationships between policy, planning, economic development, governance systems, history and urban morphology. Alongside more conventional methods, analytical approaches include built form analysis, participant observation, photographic analysis and urban labs. Appealing to upper level undergraduate and masters' students, academics and others involved in urban renewal, the book offers a rich combination of theoretical insight and empirical analysis, contributing to literature on gentrification, the right to the city, and community participation in neighbourhood change.

Over the past decades, both governments and public benefit organizations have diversified their efforts to address young people's needs. One strategy for doing so has been through the implementation of initiatives specifically targeting youth. These efforts, which are referred to as youth development (YD) initiatives, come in a variety of forms. They provide a diverse array of resources with varying levels of impact in the lives of youth. The present study explores the dynamics of youth disproportionality in Africa. Using case study of the country of Senegal, it examines what services and resources are provided to youth by YD organizations. It contemplates whether the quality of youths' participation in youth-specific initiatives is in itself a resource that these organizations leverage. Finally, it questions youth involved in these initiatives about their perceptions of their communities and the national government. It is guided by the following research questions: Do YD organizations' participatory models and the types of resources they provide to youth in a particular neighborhood in Senegal affect how they perceive their government and/or their geographically defined neighborhood? Does the level of youth participation influence whether their perceptions of a successful YD initiative are congruent with those of the organizational administration?

Contributing Factors To Engagement In Online Learning Environments The Relationship Between Sense Of Community And Participation written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with categories.

Since its inception, online continuing education programs have experienced great variation in the degree of participation among students. There is a growing body of literature suggesting that a sense of community is a possible predictor of participation in educational programs. Since online instruction is not conducted face-to-face, direct social interaction is missing. However, there exists a variety of online instructional methods that are designed to create social interaction and thus facilitate and foster a sense of community among participants in these programs. This dissertation sought to identify a model that would suggest what variables related to a sense of community might predict participation among students enrolled in an online continuing education program. This investigation included development of an instrument to measure participants' feeling of a sense of community, and examination of the relationship of the instrument scores with three components of participation (overall participation, interactive participation, and non-interactive participation). This investigation was conducted on a two-year online continuing medical education program at a university located in the southwestern United States. The participants were physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician's assistants representing three different cohorts. Item analysis of the instrument to measure sense of community revealed a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of .89. A principal components analysis using an orthogonal (varimax) rotation produced four factors (subscales) with Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranging from .70 to .86. The overall sense of community and four subscale scores were then compared to participation scores of participants. Preliminary analyses revealed no gender or cohort differences. A significant correlation was found between communicating for understanding subscale scores and interactive participation scores. Significant positive correlation coefficients were also found between the overall sense of community score and overall participation score as well as interactive participation score. This preliminary investigation indicated that the sense of community instrument developed for this study is a reliable measure including four factors which constitute a definition of sense of community. Further, it revealed that interactive participation in the course may be predicted from communicating for understanding and that sense of community is positively correlated to overall participation and interactive participation, but not to non-interactive participation.
