I «partigia» erano - secondo un modo di dire piemontese - i combattenti della Resistenza spregiudicati nell'uso nelle armi: decisi, e svelti di mano. A loro Primo Levi ha intitolato una poesia del 1981. Narratore formidabile, Levi ha steso però un velo di silenzio sulle settimane da lui trascorse come ribelle nella valle d'Aosta dell'autunno 1943, prima della cattura e della deportazione ad Auschwitz. Non ha alluso che di sfuggita a un «segreto brutto». Scavando in questo segreto, e allargando lo sguardo dalla valle d'Aosta all'Italia del Nord-Ovest, Sergio Luzzatto racconta - attraverso una storia della Resistenza - la storia della Resistenza. Il dilemma della scelta, quale si pose dopo l'8 settembre ai giovani di una nazione allo sbando. L'amalgama di passioni e di ragioni dei refrattari all'ordine nazifascista. Il problema della legittimità e della moralità della violenza. Luzzatto restituisce figure vere, non santini della Resistenza o mostri di Salò. Eppure i protagonisti di Partigia si rivelano essi stessi, a loro modo, figure esemplari. E personaggi memorabili. Così un partigiano come Mario Pelizzari, l'«Alimiro » che da Ivrea combatté una personalissima sua guerra contro il male nazifascista. Così un collaborazionista come Edilio Cagni, la spia che tradì la banda di Levi prima di diventare, dopo la Liberazione, informatore degli americani. Anche Primo Levi è qui figura vera, e diversa dal santino. Un Levi dolente, prima ancora che come testimone della Soluzione finale del problema ebraico, come testimone degli aspetti più scabrosi di una guerra civile.

La 4ème de couv. indique : Nous avions faim et froid, nous étions les partisans les plus désarmés du Piémont et, probablement, les plus démunis [...] Nous manquions d’hommes capables, et étions au contraire submergés par un déluge de gens disqualifiés, de bonne foi et de mauvaise foi, qui arrivaient de la plaine à la recherche d’une organisation inexistante.» Ces quelques lignes du Système périodique révèlent un Primo Levi à la fois peu disert et très sévère sur les trois mois qu’il passa dans le maquis, à l’automne 1943. La chute était logique et plus encore, «conforme à la justice» : «Nous nous étions trouvés obligés en conscience d’exécuter une condamnation et nous l’avions fait, mais nous en étions sortis démolis, démoralisés, désireux de voir tout finir et de finir nous-mêmes.» Les deux résistants exécutés pour espionnage étaient innocents ; aujourd’hui, leur souvenir est entretenu comme «victimes du fascisme» sur le monument commémoratif à Turin. Le vrai mouchard sera condamné à la Libération, sur la base notamment du témoignage de Primo Levi, de retour d'Auschwitz. Levi avait échappé, le jour de son arrestation le 13 décembre 1943, à l’exécution immédiate en se déclarant juif et non pas partisan. This book proposes a significant new interpretation of the relations between Italian partisans and British forces during the Italian campaign of 1943-1945. The core of the argument challenges many assumptions that are today still present both in Italian and in the Anglophone historiography on the subject. In current historiography, the debate is still ongoing as to whether the British were a hostile force to the Italian Resistance, trying to weaken it to better control it, or a genuine and committed ally. Instead of a clear-cut and artificial dichotomy between the 'Italians' and the 'British' this book posits the idea that lines were often blurred, and relations existed on a scale that included lots of grey and overlapping areas. Thanks to an original approach that examines the Italo-British interaction from a point of view as close as possible to the ‘action’, it proposes a new interpretation based on the way the British image was cast in Italy. Politics is left in the background in favour of an analysis of the concrete problems and difficulties that Italians and the British had to face when working together and how these processes influenced the image of Great Britain in Italy in the following decades. This produces a final interpretation that enriches current historiography and pushes forward our understanding of the relationship between Italian partisans and British forces.
