Un dio sul pero presenta cinquanta brevi racconti composti da Italo Calvino tra il 1941 e il 1949. Dieci sono inediti. Quando esordisce con Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno o pubblica la prima raccolta, Ultimo viene il corvo, Calvino ha già dietro di sé molti testi che, riletti a distanza di tempo, gli appariranno come «scritti d'un'altra persona in cui però riconosco una consanguineità, un rapporto come tra padre e figlio, in cui il me stesso di venticinque anni fa è insieme figlio e padre del me stesso di adesso»: storie della Resistenza e apologhi politico-esistenziali, con rapide battute di dialogo; scritture a matrice umoristica e scritture disegnate, talvolta disposte a formare una serie. Immancabili una forte spinta immaginativa e un'ironia che sfocia anche nel paradosso. L'intento dell'antologia, scrive Bruno Falcetto, è «suggerire un diverso modo di guardare alla prima produzione calviniana di racconti. Innanzi tutto considerandola al plurale, come un insieme di prime produzioni»: una vera e propria mappatura dei diversi percorsi sperimentati dal Calvino ventenne o giù di lì, testimonianza della sua vocazione al contempo «robusta ed esitante, fra dichiarazioni spavalde e ammissioni di fragilità, sogni di gloria e senso del limite e del ridicolo, grandi visioni e disorientamenti», così come del formarsi di una precisa idea di letteratura, sollecitata da un incontro profondo e sfidante con la storia.

During the sixteenth century, antiquarian studies (the study of the material past, comprising modern archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics) rose in Europe in parallel to the technical development of the printing press. Some humanists continued to prefer the manuscript form to disseminate their findings – as numerous fair copies of sylloges and treatises attest –, but slowly the printed medium grew in popularity, with its obvious advantages but also its many challenges. As antiquarian printed works appeared, the relationship between manuscript and printed sources also became less linear: printed copies of earlier works were annotated to serve as a means of research, and printed works could be copied by hand – partially or even completely. This book explores how antiquarian literature (collections of inscriptions, treatises, letters...) developed throughout the sixteenth century, both in manuscript and in print; how both media interacted with each other, and how these printed antiquarian works were received, as attested by the manuscript annotations left by their early modern owners and readers.
