This series is for people--adults and teenagers--who are interested in computer programming because it's fun. The three volumes use the Logo programming language as the vehicle for an exploration of computer science from the perspective of symbolic computation and artificial intelligence. Logo is a dialect of Lisp, a language used in the most advanced research projects in computer science, especially in artificial intelligence. Throughout the series, functional programming techniques (including higher order functions and recursion) are emphasized, but traditional sequential programming is also used when appropriate. In the second edition, the first two volumes have been rearranged so that illustrative case studies appear with the techniques they demonstrate. Volume 1 includes a new chapter about higher order functions, and the recursion chapters have been reorganized for greater clarity. Volume 2 includes a new tutorial chapter about macros, an exclusive capability of Berkeley Logo, and two new projects. Throughout the series, the larger program examples have been rewritten for greater readability by more extensive use of data abstraction.Volume 1 Symbolic Computing, is addressed to a reader who has used computers and wants to learn the ideas behind them. Symbolic computing is the manipulation of words and sentences, in contrast both to the graphics most people associate with Logo and to the numerical computation with which more traditional languages such as Pascal and C++ are most comfortable. This volume is well known for its clear and thorough presentation of recursion, a key idea in computer science that other texts treat as arcane and difficult. The Logo programs in these books and the author's free Berkeley Logo interpreter are available via the Internet or on diskette.

Computer programming means that you make those machines operate so that they can perform various useful activities for you and others. The skills of computer programming are very important in our present world, and these skills are likely to become even more important in the future. On the pages of this book, the reader is introduced in a natural way to the world of computer programming. The reader does not require any previous knowledge of the subject. The basic operating principles of computers are taught before the actual studies of computer programming begin. All the examples of computer programs are written so that the reader encounters a lot of natural-language expressions instead of the traditional abbreviations of the computer world. This approach aims to make learning easier. The pages of the book are designed to maximize readability and understandability. Examples of computer programs are presented in easy-to-read graphical descriptions. Because the pages of the book are large, example programs can be presented in more reader-friendly way than in traditional programming books. In addition, pages are written so that the reader does not need to turn them unnecessarily. This book uses a programming language called C++ (pronounced "see plus plus") to teach computer programming. C++ is suitable for beginners in the field of computer programming because with C++ it is possible to make simple programs, and build a solid understanding of the basics of computing and programming. Plenty of programming exercises are included in the book. The reader can work with the exercises by using free programming tools on a personal computer. The book explains how to download the free programming tools from the Internet. This book is a new kind of book to learn computer programming. Making things clear and eliminating risks for misunderstanding have been primary concerns in the design of the book. Because in some ways the book is less mathematical than other programming books, some experienced computer programmers may hesitate to use it. However, for a beginner in the field of computer programming, this book offers a possibility to make learning easier. Also more experienced people can benefit from the book if they are prepared to discard the traditional abbreviations in computer programs, and follow the programming style that is advocated in the book.

Java for Practitioners doesn just provide an introduction to Java, it also tells you all about object orientation. One of the biggest problems with many of the Java books currently on the market is that they only teach the language and ignore the object orientation aspects (or at best just devote one chapter to it). Not only does John Hunt cover both Java and object orientation thoroughly but he also realises that practitioners learn best by oing'and he writes this book to reflect that. Chapters are dippable-into and ideas and concepts are introduced by exercises and practical examples. The book does of course cover the new release - Java 2/JDK 1.2 - and it also includes the Java Self-Tester which lets readers determine whether they are ready to take Sun's Java Certification exam. There is also an essential reference section which provides detailed solutions to real world Java problems, and new Java features. No one intending to move over to Java should be without this book.
