“Laurie Colwin was the best kind of master: human and humorous, full of wisdom and love.” —Emma Straub, New York Times bestselling author of All Adults Here In these fourteen tales, Laurie Colwin explores love and marriage, friendship and loyalty, and obligation and desire with the compassion and wit that earned her the devotion of legions of readers. When Passion and Affect was first published in 1974, Colwin was anointed as a young writer to watch. Now, a new generation has the opportunity to encounter some of the most charmingly complicated and beautifully drawn characters in modern fiction: a music critic whose orderly life is threatened by her flirtation with a married cartographer; an ornithologist perplexed by human mating rituals despite his expertise in the natural world; and two young men, best friends and cousins, whose relationship is disrupted by the sudden arrival of Misty Berkowitz in their lives. Passion and Affect is a dazzling must-have collection from "a wise, big hearted writer. A deft and funny one, too." (Washington Post)

The Psychology Of Passion written by Dr Robert J. Vallerand and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-01 with Psychology categories.

Winner of the 2017 APA William James Book Award The concept of passion is one we regularly use to describe our interests, and yet there is no broad theory that can explain the development and consequences of passion for activities across people's lives. In The Psychology of Passion, Robert J. Vallerand presents the first such theory, providing a complete presentation of the Dualistic Model of Passion and the empirical evidence that supports it. Vallerand conceives of two types of passion: harmonious passion, which remains under the person's control, and obsessive passion, which controls the person. While the first typically leads to adaptive behaviors, the obsessive form of passion leads to less adaptive and, at times, maladaptive behaviors. Vallerand highlights the effects of these two types of passion on a number of psychological phenomena, such as cognition, emotions, performance, relationships, aggression, and violence. He also discusses the development of passion and reviews a range of literature on passion for activities.

Impersonal Passion written by Denise Riley and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-04-08 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Denise Riley is renowned as a feminist theorist and a poet and for her remarkable refiguring of familiar but intransigent problems of identity, expression, language, and politics. In Impersonal Passion, she turns to everyday complex emotional and philosophical problems of speaking and listening. Her provocative meditations suggest that while the emotional power of language is impersonal, this impersonality paradoxically constitutes the personal. In nine linked essays, Riley deftly unravels the rhetoric of life’s absurdities and urgencies, its comforts and embarrassments, to insist on the forcible affect of language itself. She teases out the emotional complexities of such quotidian matters as what she ironically terms the right to be lonely in the face of the imperative to be social or the guilt associated with feeling as if you’re lying when you aren’t. Impersonal Passion reinvents questions from linguistics, the philosophy of language, and cultural theory in an illuminating new idiom: the compelling emotion of the language of the everyday.

The Politics Of Passion written by Dirk Wiemann and has been published by Peter Lang Pub Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Social Science categories.

The demise of the modern self-centred subject does not engender a waning but a politicisation of affect: The site of passion is now no longer the individual's interiority but the contact zone of intersubjective encounters. The public and political status of the emotions thus becomes apparent, making visible how affects are embedded in and shaped by discursive regimes. Neither spontaneous nor overdetermined, passion is therefore not the -other- of reason but a deeply social energy that fuels political, cultural and everyday practices. <I>The Politics of Passion combines theoretical reframings of affect and emotion in global modernity with analyses of concrete instances of politics of passion from above or from below. By including debates and struggles in Western, Asian and African contexts, the volume attends to the actual plurality of affective rationalities and politics beyond a Eurocentric framework."

The Collected Stories written by Laurie Colwin and has been published by Open Road Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-03 with Fiction categories.

The definitive collection of short fiction from a writer “who has single-handedly revitalized the short story” (Los Angeles Times). “If anyone wrote eloquently and magnificently about affairs of the heart, it was Laurie Colwin” (San Francisco Chronicle). In this stunning volume, which gathers together her three brilliant story collections, the beloved author of Home Cooking explores the mysteries of life and love with her signature blend of empathy, wisdom, and wit. Passion and Affect: From two ornithologists who find their own mating habits to be just as inscrutable as those of their avian subjects to a lonely husband whose search for exotic hobbies leads him to television, junk food, and a young woman with Technicolor green hair, the heroes and heroines of Colwin’s debut story collection are clever, naïve, brave, delicate, and fickle. In other words, they are profoundly human, and their precisely observed, warmly intelligent stories capture nothing less than what it means to be alive in the modern world. The Lone Pilgrim: In the title story of this elegant and insightful collection, a book illustrator meets the man of her dreams and struggles to say goodbye to her old self. “A Mythological Subject” is the tale of an adulterous affair that arrives unexpected and unwanted, like a natural disaster, but is no mistake. “A Girl Skating” is a delicate and haunting portrait of the unbridgeable divide between life and art, poetry and nature. “One reads with fascination the steps by which lovers in one story after another stumble upon their forthright declarations” (The New York Times Book Review). Another Marvelous Thing: These “witty, literate, and intelligent” linked stories are told from the alternating perspectives of two adulterous lovers (The New York Times Book Review). Josephine “Billy” Delielle and Francis Clemens are economists married to other people, but the similarities end there. He is fastidious; she is a slob. He delights in good food and fine wine; her refrigerator is always empty. He is old and sentimental; she is young and tough minded. Charting their electrifying affair from beginning to end, this exquisite story collection tackles the thorniest of subjects with honesty, grace, and humor.
