The French kingdom dissolved into civil wars, known as the 'wars of religion', for a generation from 1562 to 1598. This book examines the reactions of France's governing groups to that experience. Their major political endeavour was securing peace. They attempted to achieve it through a religious pluralism not envisaged in any other state on this scale in this period. Its achievement would only be fulfilled, however, alongside a reform of the kingdom's institutions and society. Peace and reform went hand in hand - a moral agenda for restoration. France's notables drew on reservoirs of classical and Christian moral philosophy and wisdom to find practical answers to the difficult problems of governance that confronted them. The resulting public introspection and vocal debates are difficult to match anywhere else in Europe at this time. They were an essential part of the profound sense of crisis that France's governing elites experienced during the later sixteenth century. Drawing extensively on manuscript and printed sources not hitherto examined, this book analyses for the first time the debates at the Estates General of Blois (1576-7) and the Assembly of Notables at Saint-Germain-en-Laye of 1583-4. It shows the French polity in a fresh light, presenting major issues of political thought in their public and practical context. And it re-examines the crucial and little-understood reign of Henri III, the last Valois king, suggesting how Bourbon France could have emerged very differently from the civil wars of the late sixteenth century.

Ce n'est pas le fait de parler qui est compliqué, c'est la peur. Après avoir parlé quelques fois, ce sera beaucoup mieux. Il suffit de commencer. Dans vos prochains discours, vous choisirez d'être plus expressif, plus énergique, plus dynamique, plus vocal, de sourire davantage et de rire avec le public. Fixez ces attentes positives, n'ayez pas peur. Chacun d'entre nous a commencé avec cette peur, nos discours d'ouverture étaient boiteux, et si quelqu'un nous filmait à l'époque et nous montrait maintenant comment nous avons commencé, je pense que nous serions un peu gênés. C'est exactement pour ça qu'il ne faut pas être dur avec soi-même. Je sais que vous voulez obtenir le plus de résultats possibles immédiatement, mais pour commencer, choisissez d'être juste un peu meilleur qu'hier, un peu meilleur que ceux qui vous entourent. N'exigez pas trop de vous-même d'un seul coup, car le poids de ce que vous voulez sera trop lourd pour vos épaules non entraînées et ce poids vous submergera. Choisissez un entraînement régulier et augmentez progressivement le poids que vous mettez sur vos épaules, c'est la seule façon de réussir à vous améliorer. Essayez de faire en sorte que votre message soit juste un peu meilleur que celui des autres orateurs et pour cela, essayez de vous préparer un peu mieux qu'eux. C'est le secret et si vous pouvez le comprendre, votre vie peut être une véritable réussite. Il y a des milliers de personnes qui font cela en tant que profession, à un niveau professionnel. C'est probablement ce que vous voulez faire aussi, je pense, à partir du moment où vous avez acheté ou reçu ce livre en cadeau. Ce que vous devez comprendre, dès le départ, c'est que le public présent dans la salle est différent. Il existe de nombreuses façons de le caractériser, mais je pense que si vous choisissez ces trois catégories que je présente dans mes livres sur l'art oratoire, il vous sera beaucoup plus facile de vous adapter au public et de contrôler la salle. Comprenez que le public aura trois attitudes à votre égard, ces attitudes recoupant les trois groupes présents dans la salle. Le public vous juge et vous évalue selon ses propres critères. Pourquoi l'art oratoire est-il vital ? Car vous avez beau parler devant le miroir, ce n'est pas la même chose que de parler devant ceux qui vous regardent et qui peuvent vous donner un feedback. Quelle que soit la qualité de votre discours dans le miroir, vous n'aurez pas de retour de votre image. La prise de parole en miroir n'est que le début de votre carrière d'orateur. Le véritable test est de savoir si vous réussissez ou non devant un public. Parler en public augmentera votre influence et fera de vous un meilleur leader. Les véritables leaders savent parler, et leurs messages atteignent l'esprit et le cœur de ceux qui les écoutent. Vous pouvez vous aussi devenir un grand leader en développant l'influence dont vous avez besoin, étape par étape, grâce à la culture de la valeur.
