The Biopsychosocial Approach written by Richard M. Frankel and has been published by University Rochester Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Medical categories.

For thousands of years, Western culture has dichotomized science and art, empiricism and subjective experience, and biology and psychology. In contrast with the prevailing view in philosophy, neuroscience, and literary criticism, George Engel, an internist and practicing physician, published a paper in the journal Science in 1977 entitled "The Need for a New Medical Model: A Challenge for Biomedicine." In the context of clinical medicine, Engel made the deceptively simple observation that actions at the biological, psychological, and social level are dynamically interrelated and that these relationships affect both the process and outcomes of care. The biopsychosocial perspective involves an appreciation that disease and illness do not manifest themselves only in terms of pathophysiology, but also may simultaneously affect many different levels of functioning, from cellular to organ system to person to family to society. This model provides a broader understanding of disease processes as encompassing multiple levels of functioning including the effect of the physician-patient relationship. This book, which contains Engel's seminal article, looks at the continuing relevance of his work and the biopsychosocial model as it is applied to clinical practice, research, and education and administration. Contributors include: Thomas Inui, Richard Frankel, Timothy Quill, Susan McDaniel, Ronald Epstein, Peter LeRoux, Diane Morse, Anthony Suchman, Geoffrey Williams, Frank deGruy, Robert Ader, Thomas Campbell, Edward Deci, Moira Stewart, Elaine Dannefer, Edward Hundert, Lindsey Henson, Robert Smith, Kurt Fritzsche, Manfred Cierpka, Michael Wirsching, Howard Beckman, and Theodore Brown.

Preventing Mental Illness written by Despo Kritsotaki and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-16 with History categories.

This book provides an overview of a diverse array of preventive strategies relating to mental illness, and identifies their achievements and shortcomings. The chapters in this collection illustrate how researchers, clinicians and policy makers drew inspiration from divergent fields of knowledge and practice: from eugenics, genetics and medication to mental hygiene, child guidance, social welfare, public health and education; from risk management to radical and social psychiatry, architectural design and environmental psychology. It highlights the shifting patterns of biological, social and psychodynamic models, while adopting a gender perspective and considering professional developments as well as changing social and legal contexts, including deinstitutionalisation and social movements. Through vigorous research, the contributors demonstrate that preventive approaches to mental health have a long history, and point to the conclusion that it might well be possible to learn from such historical attempts. The book also explores which of these approaches are worth considering in future and which are best confined to the past. Within this context, the book aims at stoking and informing debate and conversation about how to prevent mental illness and improve mental health in the years to come. Chapters 3, 10, and 12 of this book are available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com

"Journey Through Time: Unraveling Ketamine's Past, Present, and Future in Psychiatry, a Patient's Guide" is an in-depth resource that offers a comprehensive understanding of ketamine's history, its current use in psychiatry, and the potential it holds for the future, all presented in an accessible and patient-friendly manner. Starting with its origins, the book takes readers on a journey from ketamine's synthesis in the 1960s, its early use as an anesthetic, to its adoption as a psychedelic drug during the counterculture era. The narrative captures the nuances of this period, providing insight into how societal perceptions and misuse led to ketamine's marginalization. The guide then transitions to a transformative period in ketamine's history, where research illuminated its potent antidepressant effects. It carefully explains how these findings have spurred a 'Ketamine Renaissance' in the 21st century, resulting in its usage for treatment-resistant depression. The book provides patient-friendly explanations of how ketamine works in the brain, its administration methods, potential side effects, and the benefits it offers. Venturing into the future, the guide presents a look at the ongoing research and potential applications of ketamine beyond depression, such as for PTSD, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain. It also discusses the development of new ketamine derivatives and its possible role within the burgeoning field of psychedelic-assisted therapy. The book concludes with practical advice for patients considering ketamine treatment, including a list of questions to ask healthcare providers, strategies for managing potential side effects, and guidance on what to expect during and after treatment. "Journey Through Time: Unraveling Ketamine's Past, Present, and Future in Psychiatry, a Patient's Guide" demystifies ketamine's journey within the realm of psychiatry, offering a balanced portrayal of its potential benefits and associated risks. This guide is an invaluable resource for patients, their loved ones, and anyone interested in understanding the role of ketamine in modern mental health treatment.
