Pastoralist Farmer Conflicts In Nigeria written by Adeola Aderayo Adebajo and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-26 with Political Science categories.

This book provides an in-depth analysis of one of the most persistent and perennial types of conflict in Africa– pastoralist-farmer conflicts – and the linkages with conflict management and resolution, vulnerability and displacement, government capacity and deficits, and the role of local and international governmental and non-governmental agencies in the specific Nigerian context. Conflict-induced displacement generates humanitarian and protection issues particularly when the government is unwilling to carry out its responsibility of protecting the civilians in flight. The book fills the intellectual vacuum created on the implications the conflict management mechanisms adopted in resolving pastoralist-farmer conflict have on the protection of internally displaced persons (IDPs). It extensively describes the displacement and associated risks and vulnerabilities of IDPs arising from the conflict and the efforts of the different stakeholders in responding to the protection issues. It examines various conflict management mechanisms adopted by stakeholders in resolving pastoralist-farmer conflict and how they have affected the protection of IDPs. It also elucidates the imperativeness of internally displaced persons’ involvement in the management/resolution processes of pastoralist-farmer conflict, which will not only impact the resolution of the conflict but also provide opportunity for their issues of protection to be addressed.

We examine how a better understanding of how climate change induces herder migration to other locations and subsequent conflicts with sedentary farmers influences respondents' support for policies that accommodate outgroup members. We field a pre-registered survey experiment to 550 residents of a conflict zone in Nigeria and discover that as perceived herder vulnerability due to climate change increases, residents are inclined to support policies that accommodate these herders. In other words, rhetorical exposure that leads respondents to perceive climate change as the primary driver of herder migration to other communities increases support for accommodating policies. The effects are essentially consistent regardless of the respondents' proximity to the conflict, as measured by their loss experiences, or their trust in outgroup members or dominant domestic institutions. These results highlight the need to conceptualize vulnerability as the primary driver of the herder-farmer conflict, which is a settled fact as opposed to other narratives, allowing for new methods of mapping public opinion in favor of integrating both groups for peaceful coexistence in conflict zones.

This book examines the nexus between political borders, pastoral nomadism, and human security in Africa. It uses a host of applied interdisciplinary insights to analyse social, political, and cultural processes, circumstances, and consequences to showcase the human security crisis in the context of climate change, inter-group relations, leadership strategies, institutions, and governance within the region. With a special focus on West Africa and Nigeria, the volume discusses crucial themes that highlight the role of borders in the security architecture of the region which include, • Political economy of herdsmen-farmers’ conflicts in West Africa; • The scarcity-migration perspective of the Sahel region; • Population pressure, urbanization, and nomadic pastoral violence in West Africa; • Human trafficking and kidnapping for ransom in Nigeria; • Drivers of ‘labour’ migration of Fulani herders to Ghana, and other topics. A key contribution to a pressing issue, this volume will be of interest to scholars and students of history, political science, anthropology, geography, international relations, literature, environmental science, and peace and conflict studies.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2023 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: A+, National Open University of Nigeria (National Open University of Nigeria), course: Peace Studies and Conflicts Resolutions, language: English, abstract: The paper investigates the issue of farmers-herders' conflicts and their profound impacts on food security in Benue State, Nigeria. This research employs the qualitative research method, using indepth oral interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) as tools for data collection. Through an extensive examination of the conflict's causes, effects, and potential mitigation strategies, this study offers a comprehensive understanding of this complex challenge. It finds that the causes of these conflicts are diverse, ranging from illegal encroachments into farmlands, climate change, population growth, and inadequacies in government policies. These root causes have far-reaching implications for food security in the region. The effects of farmers-herders' conflicts on food security are dire. Loss of human lives, mass displacement, land degradation, and increased hunger have been identified as the significant consequences. These effects compound an already fragile food security situation in Benue State, rendering it a matter of critical concern. In response to these challenges, this research proposes a multifaceted approach to mitigate the conflict's impact on food security. This includes enlightenment campaigns for value reorientation, the replacement of offensive terms and policies, the formation of open public forums for discussions, the avoidance of hate speeches, and the implementation of an effective land distribution approach. These strategies are aimed at fostering unity and understanding between farmers and herders, leading to sustainable peace and ultimately enhancing food security in Benue State.

This study provides a pragmatic solution to the frequent farmers-herdsmen clashes in Nigeria, with Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State as a case study. The objective of the study is to assess the unexplored benefits that could be derived if genetically modified grasses are incorporated into the proposed ranching solution. Hence, a multi-stage random sampling approach at finding the origin and repercussions of the farmers'-herdsmen clashes in Wukari was adopted. This paper concludes that the inclusion of genetically modified grasses into the ranching plan will help foster a peaceful symbiotic relationship between farmers and herdsmen in Wukari, and Nigeria at large; by reducing cases of cattle disease infections, improve grass resistant to insect infestations, improve milk yield production in cattle, and can be used for rural electrification. Thus, this study recommends that aside the use of dialogue as a means of managing the farmers'-herdsmen crises; the incorporation of genetically modified grasses in the ranching plan will ensure a significant embrace of the plan by both farmers and herders, which is key in guaranteeing the success and effectiveness of the policy.

Although the incidence of conflicts between Fulani nomadic pastoralists and sedentary farmers in Nigeria have risen significantly during the last decade, no study has, to the best of my knowledge, examined how these conflicts influence distrust of members of the Fulani ethnic group and the larger Muslim population, nor the conditions under which these conflicts, which are primarily about competition over land and water resources, morph into religious conflicts. Using novel survey data collected from Kaduna, the state with the third highest incidence of pastoral conflicts in Nigeria, this study fills these gaps. The regression results show that exposure to pastoral conflicts cause distrust of members of the Fulani ethnic group and Muslims; although the size of the effect is much larger for the Fulani compared to Muslims. This shows that the population in Kaduna tend to conflate the Fulani with Muslims. Religious polarization was found to catalyze the process of resource conflicts turning religious.
