This study provides a pragmatic solution to the frequent farmers-herdsmen clashes in Nigeria, with Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State as a case study. The objective of the study is to assess the unexplored benefits that could be derived if genetically modified grasses are incorporated into the proposed ranching solution. Hence, a multi-stage random sampling approach at finding the origin and repercussions of the farmers'-herdsmen clashes in Wukari was adopted. This paper concludes that the inclusion of genetically modified grasses into the ranching plan will help foster a peaceful symbiotic relationship between farmers and herdsmen in Wukari, and Nigeria at large; by reducing cases of cattle disease infections, improve grass resistant to insect infestations, improve milk yield production in cattle, and can be used for rural electrification. Thus, this study recommends that aside the use of dialogue as a means of managing the farmers'-herdsmen crises; the incorporation of genetically modified grasses in the ranching plan will ensure a significant embrace of the plan by both farmers and herders, which is key in guaranteeing the success and effectiveness of the policy.

This research employs the qualitative research method, using indepth oral interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) as tools for data collection. Through an extensive examination of the conflict's causes, effects, and potential mitigation strategies, this study offers a comprehensive understanding of this complex challenge. It finds that the causes of these conflicts are diverse, ranging from illegal encroachments into farmlands, climate change, population growth, and inadequacies in government policies. These root causes have far-reaching implications for food security in the region. The effects of farmers-herders' conflicts on food security are dire. Loss of human lives, mass displacement, land degradation, and increased hunger have been identified as the significant consequences. These effects compound an already fragile food security situation in Benue State, rendering it a matter of critical concern. In response to these challenges, this research proposes a multifaceted approach to mitigate the conflict's impact on food security. This includes enlightenment campaigns for value reorientation, the replacement of offensive terms and policies, the formation of open public forums for discussions, the avoidance of hate speeches, and the implementation of an effective land distribution approach. These strategies are aimed at fostering unity and understanding between farmers and herders, leading to sustainable peace and ultimately enhancing food security in Benue State.

Herder-farmer relations and interactions are not new in Ghana. These relations of the herders and farmers are presented as noticeable by conflict, complementarities and cooperation. However, there are widespread reports of the increase in violent conflicts between the farmers and herders in many parts of Ghana. The Fulani herdsmen have always been alleged to be violent in their interactions with the residents over the use of resources. The study examined the causes of the herder-farmer conflicts and the effects of the conflicts in Asante Akyim Agogo. The study also examines the responses of the local and central government, and the strategies adopted to curb the conflict. The study adopted a qualitative research approach which helped in gathering information on the conflicts between herders and farmers in Agogo in order to explain the findings of the study and making valid conclusions. Secondary data from books, journals, articles and the internet were used during the research. Given the complexity of the subject matter in this content analysis, and the number of philosophical questions that it raises, it took an interpretive approach. It was based on a critical review of existing literature from a variety of academic works. The underpinning theories for this study were the theory of Farmer-Herder Relations, Conflict theory and, Environmental Scarcity and Eco-Survivalism theories of Conflict. These interpretations emphasized on the increase of crop destruction, cattle rustling, raping of women, killing of cattle and armed robbery as causes of farmer-herder conflict Asante Akyim Agogo. The implication was that, several people lost their lives and properties, poverty and social problems, destruction of farm products and reduction of output and income of farmers. The study concluded with the recommendation that farmers and herders or pastoralists must create good exchange arrangements with families to make use of crop residue or to trade goods. These lawful engagements can include the means for control over the pasture, regulation of access to routes, regulation of disputes over property rights, identification of herds, marriage disputes and other social problems.

The Earth's human population is expected to pass eight billion by the year 2025, while rapid growth in the global economy will spur ever increasing demands for natural resources. The world will consequently face growing scarcities of such vital renewable resources as cropland, fresh water, and forests. Thomas Homer-Dixon argues in this sobering book that these environmental scarcities will have profound social consequences--contributing to insurrections, ethnic clashes, urban unrest, and other forms of civil violence, especially in the developing world. Homer-Dixon synthesizes work from a wide range of international research projects to develop a detailed model of the sources of environmental scarcity. He refers to water shortages in China, population growth in sub-Saharan Africa, and land distribution in Mexico, for example, to show that scarcities stem from the degradation and depletion of renewable resources, the increased demand for these resources, and/or their unequal distribution. He shows that these scarcities can lead to deepened poverty, large-scale migrations, sharpened social cleavages, and weakened institutions. And he describes the kinds of violence that can result from these social effects, arguing that conflicts in Chiapas, Mexico and ongoing turmoil in many African and Asian countries, for instance, are already partly a consequence of scarcity. Homer-Dixon is careful to point out that the effects of environmental scarcity are indirect and act in combination with other social, political, and economic stresses. He also acknowledges that human ingenuity can reduce the likelihood of conflict, particularly in countries with efficient markets, capable states, and an educated populace. But he argues that the violent consequences of scarcity should not be underestimated--especially when about half the world's population depends directly on local renewables for their day-to-day well-being. In the next decades, he writes, growing scarcities will affect billions of people with unprecedented severity and at an unparalleled scale and pace. Clearly written and forcefully argued, this book will become the standard work on the complex relationship between environmental scarcities and human violence.
