This book provides a concise account of the pathological processes involved in periodontal disease. The first chapter gives a broad overview of periodontal disease and is followed by accounts of the periodontium in health and disease. The book then deals with the micro-organisms implicated in periodontal disease and evaluates their significance. The host responses to factors present in dental plaque are discussed, followed by an account of the interactions between bacteria and the host which cause tissue damage. This leads to a consideration of the different clinical manifestations of the disease, including those associated with HIV infection. In the final chapter, a rational approach to treatment is presented, based on an understanding of the disease mechanisms discussed in the book.

Even if periodontal disease is certainly not a generally accepted cause of death, periodontal treatment may obviously save lives.

This book aims to provide clinicians with a refined understanding of the biology that underlies periodontal diseases, thereby offering a sound basis for improved clinical decision making with regard to prevention strategies, diagnosis, and therapy. All significant aspects of periodontal pathogenesis are covered, including the roles played by the oral microbiome and biofilms, bacterial virulence factors, cells of the immune system, matrix metalloproteinases, proinflammatory and osteolytic cytokines, genetic factors, and antimicrobial peptides. Periodontal diseases are among the most common infectious diseases in humans, and the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. The functional and esthetic problems associated with these diseases compromise quality of life, and their treatment imposes large financial burdens on national health systems and private patients. Up-to-date knowledge of periodontal pathogenesis is therefore essential for the contemporary clinician. This book, written by experts from Europe and the Americas, delivers such knowledge in an accessible, clinician-friendly way.

Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXIV CONCLUSION THE SOCIOLOGIC ASPECTS OP DENTAL DISEASE The authors feel that this study of periodontic infections should not be brought to a conclusion without some consideration of the sociological importance of these disease conditions. The development of dentistry has taken place with a constant emphasis on the repair of damage already done. The trend of modern conditions of living has increased the demand for reparative work to an extent which has made it well nigh impossible for the dentist to keep ahead of the immediate needs of his patients, to say nothing of giving sufficient attention to the field of prophylaxis. Moreover this effort to retain the teeth has unwittingly led him into methods of practice which have undermined to a degree the health of the individuals so served. The influence of dental disease and oral sepsis on the public health has been a matter of such recent demonstration that the dental profession has as yet been unable to adjust itself to the responsibilities disclosed by modern research. The dentist has been unable to grasp the weighty problems concerned in the prevention of disease, or to cooperate with those members of the dental and medical professions who are devoting their lives to this work. The prevention of disease as it relates to the tissues of the mouth, is summed up in the protection of the dental pulp by the prevention of caries, and the preservation of the health of the periodontium. Inasmuch as caries usually begins in childhood, the logical beginning of preventive measures belongs in this period of life. The dentists who have had the vision of the true function of dentistry have realized this fact. And it is through their efforts that a beginning has been made toward the...
