This book evaluates development progress using the lens of structural transformation in four groups of developing countries: Africa’s least developed countries (LDCs), Asia’s LDCs, landlocked Central Asian countries, and Pacific small island states. The analysis presented is contextualized in the diverse economic characteristics and geopolitical landscape of the four categories of countries. It emphasises critical binding factors unique for each category. Therefore, the chapter on Africa’s LDCs emphasises their path dependence determined by colonial exploitation and maintained through neo-colonial arrangements. The chapter on Asia’s LDCs highlights their democratic deficits and influences of geopolitical rivalries among global and regional powers. The chapter on landlocked Central Asian countries focuses more on the unique transition experience of those countries coming out from USSR hinterlands to independent states in the wake of the third wave of democratisation in the 1990s. Lastly the evaluation of Pacific small island states is very much influenced by the fate of geography for being small in size and remotely located. The diverse coverage offers readers rich political economy explanations of varied, but largely poor, structural transformation experiences. The book is nontechnical, with descriptive, narrative, and analytical approaches on comparative development, making it suitable and accessible for non-specialist audiences.

This book analyzes the recent development paths pursued by progressive governments in Argentina and Brazil, namely deindustrialization and reprimarization, and the social and environmental consequences thereof. A key part of understanding the trajectories in both Argentina and Brazil has been the role played by international institutions, especially the IMF and WTO, and also, the ever-growing hegemony of transnational corporations in the global economy and as a result, significantly limiting the possibilities of genuine development for local populations. Two major issues which extend beyond Latin America are: the expansion of genetically modified crops and agrotoxics and the concern for global food security and sovereignty; second, how reprimarization, associated with mining, cattle, soy and petroleum, has been key in leading to the risk of desertification in the Argentine pampas and also causing deforestation in the Amazon Rain forest, described as the lungs of the planet, and thus has major implications for climate change for the planet as a whole. In addition, this book engages with a number of theoretical issues: development and dependency in the periphery: neoliberal globalization, accumulation by dispossession, ecological and environmental debates and the role of extractivism and rent. Whereas most migration research still focuses on South to North migration, this book shines a light on mobilities within the Global South. Using migration to and within Chile as a case study, the book looks at the experiences of women, who make up a large proportion of migrants within Latin America. Mapping the experiences, aspirations and struggles of women moving to and in Chile, the book exposes the unexpected issues encountered by migrant women in their new destination country, particularly the discrimination that leaves them feeling invisible, unsettled, and, immobile. Within the region there is a long history of feminized migration and domestic labour circuits that spurs migrants’ residential movements but slows their social progress. Yet despite these challenges, the migrant women expressed their agency through the support networks they created among their compatriots and their transnational families. Overall, the book demonstrates the growing migrant populations that exist within the Global South and the impact of domestic and care labour markets in driving gendered migration in particular.
