This report summarizes the major findings of a study of 26 California high schools. The study, Paths through High School, was conducted to describe the characteristics of high school curricula in California, how they are determined and how they differ for various groups of students. Chapter 1 describes the state, district, and school levels of curricular policy and decision making in California's educational system. This chapter also describes the decisions that are made at each level and compares statewide characteristics of the schools with those of the schools in the study. In chapter 2, the major state-level policies of graduation and proficiency requirements are addressed. These have clear effects on particular cohorts of students, but do not standardize programs of study. Students therefore can pursue very different paths through high school, as demonstrated by the courses of study of three students in one of the studied schools. The academic, nonacademic, and elective course requirements of the schools studied are compared. Chapter 3 describes each schools' curricular structure whereby students are placed in various instructional cohorts. Each cohort receives a different curriculum, determined by the department-level tracking system. Sample curricular maps from the schools are analyzed. Chapter 4 outlines the processes used to place and monitor students. In chapter 5, the effects of the policies and practices found are compared in terms of the academic programs available to cohorts of students. Adolescent researchers are increasingly aware that they must examine development both across time and across context. To do so, however, requires new conceptualizations and methodological approaches to the study of development, including attention to the pathways young people choose in adolescence and follow into adulthood. This volume assembles work by key researchers in the field who are struggling to understand how developmental trajectories are constructed and maintained throughout the adolescent period. A complete understanding of developmental pathways requires the recognition that adolescents' social contexts--family, school, neighborhood, and/or peer group--are important influences on the choices they make at this developmental period. Researchers have traditionally studied contexts in isolation rather than examining the interrelationships among contexts and their implications for adolescent development. The present volume seeks to address this gap in the literature, with attention given not only to the interrelationships among contexts for white, middle-class youth, but also to these issues for minority adolescents in neighborhoods that vary in terms of access to resources. It concludes with an examination of researcher-community collaboration as a strategy to move communities toward a greater awareness of adolescent development and the problems facing youth in their community, and as a means to promote potential avenues for policy change and intervention.

She felt for a very long time that she had a problem. Not only did she not see it, but so did everybody else around her. She managed to fight the biggest fight that she could, which was her addiction. She felt that she was strong, but not the strongest. She always knew she had it in her, but it didn't seem that she could conquer it. She caused a lot of pain and a lot of distress on herself and also on others. She's been alone for so long, or at least she felt it. She can only have a dream for the perfect life, why the dream that she could visualize. She can put so much on her shoulders that the baggage she builds up was irreversible. She didn't see in herself that she could do it, but she knew that she had the strength to do it. She was a strong independent person when she knew that she had to do something about it and what there was to do about it was to fight with the strength that she had in the power and the will and the forgiveness. She always seemed to put a lot on herself, but not only was it herself; it was all those around her too. She wasn't so mindful of what she was doing to put herself through or what she did to put herself through, which was a strong addictive personality. She was attracted to the bad but was also attracted to the good. She knew what was right, but she didn't know what was wrong. She can only cause so much chaos until she stopped doing the chaos and started realizing, but she did realize what, so the question was the question that she had an addictive personality, how was she an addict, where it was addictive, tired of being an unreliable friend, sister, girlfriend, daughter, or even an acquaintance. She wasn't so approachable because she was always speaking her mind or stole or cheated from her loved ones or even random people. She had everything but didn't see that it was her own fault-no one to blame, no one to put the blame on but take responsibility.

This monograph provides college academic administrators, institutional researchers, professional and learned societies, and academic advisors with information to improve understanding of the paths students take through engineering programs in higher education. The evidence used in this study comes principally from the 11-year college transcript history (1982-1993) of the High School & Beyond/Sophomore Cohort Longitudinal Study, as well as the high school transcripts, test scores, and surveys of this nationally representative sample. This is the first national tracking study of students in any undergraduate discipline that identifies attempted major fields from the empirical evidence of college transcripts. A "curricular threshold" of engineering was defined, and the careers of students described with reference to that threshold. While 16 long-term "destinations" of students who reached the threshold are identified, they are collapsed into four for purposes of analysis: (1) thresholders, who never moved beyond the requisite entry courses; (2) migrants, who crossed the threshold of the engineering path, began to major in enginering, but switched to other fields or left college altogether; (3) completers, some of whom continued on to graduate school by age 30; and (4) two-year-only students, whose college experience was confined principally to engineering tech programs in community colleges. Findings are presented in seven parts: (1) "Engineering Paths as Established by Students"; (2) "The Content of Their Curriculum"; (3) "Engineering and Science: Confusing Signs along the Path"; (4) "Antecedents of the Engineering Path"; (5) "Choosing the Engineering Path"; (6) "Learning Engineering: Migration and Traffic"; and (7) "Experiencing Engineering: Classroom Environments, Credit Loads, and Grades." A concluding section presnts suggestions for changing the image of engineering among high school students and potential college majors, particularly women. Suggestions are also provided to other disciplines for undertaking similar tracking studies, particularly in fields where men have been a distinct minority. Contains 131 references and an appendix.
