For serious historians and casual tourists alike, Pathways to the Presidency is an ideal travel guide to touring presidential homes and museums. Gerald and Patricia Gutek invite American history enthusiasts to journey through the private lives of our presidents--from George Washington to George W. Bush--by visiting the family homes of our former chief executives as well as the libraries and museums honoring their presidencies. Aided by the Guteks' extensive research and concise biographies of each of their subjects, readers of this handy guidebook can deepen their knowledge of these central figures in American history. Presidential birthplaces, boyhood homes, and adult residences have been preserved, restored, or re-created by a local, state, and national historical agencies. Among the sites described in the Guteks' guide are Jefferson's Virginia plantations; the only home ever owned by Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois; the Truman home in Independence, Missouri; and the first home of Clinton in Hope, Arkansas. Beyond residential buildings, the guide also highlights all of the presidential libraries and museums, such as Kennedy's on the Boston waterfront, Carter's in downtown Atlanta, and Reagan's in Simi Valley. The section on each president begins with a biographical sketch followed by site descriptions of their homes and libraries that are open to the public. The information needed to locate and tour each of these sites, as well as important details on admissions, operations, and contacts, is also provided. Pathways to the Presidency offers a comprehensive introduction to historical preservation and tourism connected to America's highest office and an invitation to learn more about the U.S. presidents as distinct individuals with lives rooted in the larger American experience.

As epitomized in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, women in politics may hit a “glass ceiling” or in the case of former U.K. Prime Minister, Theresa May in 2019, go over a “glass cliff”. Even though women are starting to experience more success gaining offices at state and local levels, women’s participation in the political arena is still disproportionately low. This book explores current research findings, development practices, theory, and the lived experience to deliver provocative thinking that enhances leadership knowledge and improves leadership development of women around the world.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain insight on the nontraditional pathways to a college presidency. Specifically, this inquiry explored the career trajectory of college presidents with experience as a former chief student affairs officer (csao). The population of the study was comprised of 12 presidents from a myriad of four-year colleges and universities across the country. Data was collected primarily through semi-structured interviews and supplemented by the curricula vitae of the participants. Through data analysis, three themes emerged: (1) institutional type and fit, (2) academic profile, and (3) fundraising. Furthermore, participants offered advice for current CSAOs or other student affairs administrators who aspire to become a college or university president. Findings from this study indicated the majority of csao presidents were employed at small to medium-size institutions of higher education with preference given to small, private colleges and universities. Additionally, like most college and university presidents, csao presidents must overcome obstacles as they assume their positions. Faculty skepticism was the most noted obstacle participants encountered. Furthermore, participants advised csao presidential aspirants to actively maintain an academic profile to maintain credibility with the faculty. Last, fundraising experience was considered a necessary skill that csao presidential aspirants should have to become serious contenders for a presidential position. The purpose of this study was to capture the experiences and commentaries of current and past African American male presidents of private HBCUs in a southeastern state to discover their pathways to the presidency. The researcher utilized the qualitative method of research, which entailed interviews, content analysis, and document analysis in collecting, interpreting, and presenting the data. The experiences of current and past presidents provided access to a body of knowledge that has not been fully explored or recorded. This study utilized the qualitative method to examine the presidential pathways of two African American males in private HBCUs. The interviews for this study were semi-structured to allow for flexibility of response and dialogue. Data was recorded using a tape recorder and note-taking. The data collection process ensured the anonymity of the participants. The information obtained was presented in the narrative form for both participants. Eight main themes emerged that related to the participants obtaining the presidency of a private HBCU. The eight themes are family, role modeling, mentoring relationships, professional experiences, emotional intelligence, sense of service, sense of calling, and making a difference for one's race. Each theme was present in the narratives and interviews for each participant. In effect, the themes were factors in the success of the participants to obtain and maintain their presidency.
