In the conduct of continuing research to improve screening and induction techniques, the INPUT QUALITY Task has explored the potential contribution of programmed testing particularly with respect to use of the branching technique which tests the examinee with items appropriate to his own ability level. The present publication reports on the trial administration of two branching tests by means of a computerized system with teletypewriter input/output developed by the National Bureau of Standards. A specific objective was to determine the comparability of computerized branching tests and conventional paper-and-pencil tests with reference to reliability, test score information, and test construction rationale. The two specially constructed 8-9-item branching tests (verbal and arithmetic reasoning) and corresponding conventional 40- and 50-item tests of the Army Classification Battery (ACB) were administered, in counter-balanced order, to a sample of 102 enlisted men. Statistical analyses of score results and observations of response patterns are presented. Findings indicated substantial correlation of the short branching tests with their longer conventional counterpart tests (r = .83 and .79, greater than would be expected with equally short conventional tests). Findings also reinforced the research promise of branching tests and indicated the need for reexamination of classical test theory. (Author).

The romantic lives of emerging adults are often baffling and contradictory. While they prize committed and authentic relationships, they appear to be reluctant participants. They prefer to foster ambiguity in their romantic relationships, even as they value honesty and clarity. There is, at once, a valuing of long-term as well as a decentering of romantic relationships. Although our current understanding is incomplete, this text grapples with these perplexing questions. In attempting to understand emerging adults and their romantic lives, researchers must consider the challenging economic conditions in which today's emerging adults find themselves. With an emphasis on commitment and sacrifice and their centrality to one's readiness for a long-term relationship, this book reviews the main milestones in transitioning from an "I" identity to a "we" identity and discusses the concepts of choice and risk. The pre-World War II farm life that I describe has now markedly changed. Modem medicine is constantly making strides for diagnoses and for medical and surgical treatment successes. Some methods to meet a marriage partner have changed, but time-honored methods continue to be sound. An adolescent dream of world travel was achieved by attending surgical and medical conventions and by joining travel groups visiting cities and countries on six continents. Readers can compare their future travel experiences to my travel experiences and observations.The transition to a "retired" lifestyle permitted the opportunity of supporting charitable causes after a long professional career at the Lovelace Sandia Health System in New Mexico.
