With the increasing use of digital technologies in academic and research settings, scholars worldwide are engaging in new pathways for knowledge dissemination. Indeed, recent technological developments have made a dramatic change to the ways in which scholars nowadays access, distribute and disseminate their research work. The migration of traditional print genres to digital environments has caused phenomena of remediation, transmediality and genre hybridity. Moreover, new research-oriented genres on the Internet have emerged as a result of the multiple accountabilities of scientific output today. Thus, these scholarly pathways and transformative practices have opened up new and multiple perspectives and possibilities that are worth investigating. This volume explores knowledge dissemination practices according to two main orientations; first, with respect to the target audience, especially scholars vs. novices. Second in relation to the channels, especially multimodal and web-based platforms, and changing strategies such as popularization resources.

This unique and visionary text is a compilation of fascinating studies conducted in a variety of cross-cultural settings where children learn language and literacy with siblings, grandparents, peers and community members. Focusing on the knowledge and skills of children often invisible to educators, these illuminating studies highlight how children skilfully draw from their varied cultural and linguistic worlds to make sense of new experiences. The vastly experienced team of contributors provide powerful demonstrations of the generative activity of young children and their mediating partners - family members, peers, and community members - as they syncretise languages, literacies and cultural practices from varied contexts. Through studies grounded in home, school, community school, nursery and church settings, we see how children create for themselves radical forms of teaching and learning in ways that are not typically recognised, understood or valued in schools. This book will be invaluable reading for teachers, teacher educators, researchers and policy-makers who seek to understand the many pathways to literacy and use that knowledge to affect real change in schools.

This study examines how the occupational structure of the Australian labour market has evolved over recent years, and how individuals have fared in the process. Underlying aggregate- level change are tens of thousands of stories of individuals coping with adjustment: stories of young people deciding whether to continue their education and training beyond schooling, of mothers wanting to re-start their career after some years where it has been on hold, and of older people receiving redundancy notices and scouring job advertisements asking for skills they don't have. The study uses a statistical approach to interpret these stories and detect the underlying factors which explain change and the paths people have followed, which is comprised of an examination of changes in the occupational composition of the labour market between 1986 and 2001, as well as a retrospective investigation of the factors that enabled some individuals to find themsleves working in 1997 in jobs that might be categorised as 'knowledge work'. The report also investigates the growth of knowledge work and the knowledge society. [Executive summary, ed].
