This book delves into the public character of public theology from the sites of subalternity, the excluded Dalit (non) public in the Indian public sphere. The first Gentile who accepted Jesus in Antioch of Syria became a problem for the young church. The mother church in Jerusalem was not equipped to handle a non-Jew, either doctrinally or emotionally, yet everything was changing! Barnabas had no trouble adjusting to the new circumstances, but the leaders in Jerusalem could never fully accept the differences of the New Covenant. Gentiles were forced to face the question, "Must I become a Jew in order to be saved?" This became a controversy which troubled Paul's entire ministry. The advocates who stirred it up were called "Some men who came from James." We will see how Paul responded to the question, "How Jewish must the Church be?" Peter, Barnabas, James (the brother of Jesus), and Paul will be seen like never before. T. DEERING MANNING was ordained to the ministry in 1951. From the 1950s to the 1970s, downtown North America was reconfigured for the suburban age. Municipal officials planned renewal schemes, merchant groups lobbied for street improvements, developers built bigger and taller. Everywhere, attention turned to the problems and possibilities at the commercial and civic heart of cities. The Heart of Toronto follows one such example of reinvention: downtown Yonge Street. Efforts to keep pace with, or even lead, urban change included the street’s conversion into a car-free public space, a clean-up campaign targeting the sex industry, and the construction of North America’s largest urban shopping mall. These revitalization projects were all connected to wider trends of postwar decentralization, economic restructuring, and cultural transformation. Interweaving histories of development, civic activism, and corporate clout, The Heart of Toronto widens our understanding of the actors and power dynamics involved in remaking downtown in Canada’s largest city – a process that is far from over.
