Der patriarchale Charakter des DDR-Staates ist bis heute sehr wohl umstritten. Und das, obwohl auch in der DDR Frauenarbeit geringer gewertet, letztlich geringer bezahlt wurde als Männerarbeit. Auch in der DDR waren Frauen materiell ärmer als Männer. Auch in der DDR waren die höchsten Leitungsfunktionen von Männern besetzt ... Auf ihren im Jahr 2005 erschienenen Forschungsbericht unter dem Titel »Patriarchat im Sozialismus?« erhielten Ursula Schröter und Renate Ullrich sehr unterschiedliche Reaktionen. So hörten sie zum einen die erstaunte, nicht selten auch unwillige Frage, überwiegend von Leserinnen, warum der Titel mit einem Fragezeichen versehen sei. Der patriarchale Charakter des DDR-Staates sei durch die vorgelegte Analyse schließlich bestätigt. Zum anderen fand die Publikation offensichtlich auch Leserinnen und Leser, die sich durch den von vornherein postulierten Zusammenhang zwischen DDRSozialismus und Patriarchat betroffen oder gar verletzt fühlten. Meist wurde in solchen Debatten auf die gegenwärtige deutsche Gesellschaft und deren frauenfeindliche Defekte verwiesen. Das Fragezeichen im Titel unserer Publikation empfanden demnach die einen als überflüssig, während es die anderen als wichtigste Botschaft lasen. Der hier vorgelegte Band führt die erste Untersuchung fort und analysiert offizielle Dokumente, DEFA-Dokumentarfilme und soziologische Befragungen.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 marked the end of East Germany’s socialist regime and a new beginning for a unified German Federal Republic. Cultural historians agree that the event caused one of the deepest rifts in time and thinking seen by an entire generation of Germans—a rift that left its mark on the psyche of every citizen, challenging notions of the personal and the political, and crashing traditional understandings of the individual and the collective self. In this bold rethinking of the question, Cheryl Dueck goes beyond the social, political, and psychological discourses that Marx and Freud, Foucault and Lacan viewed as the initiators of modern (socialist) identities to explore the literature and discourse of the quest for unity of the female subject. Reading such authors as Christa Wolf, Brigitte Reimann, Helga Königsdorf, and Helga Schubert, Dueck traces the striking fissures which run through time and through the female self, haunting women within the socialist project. The book shows how two generations of women writers have struggled consciously and systematically in their letters, aesthetic writings, and literary production to create a new language to express their own sense of self within a restrictive socialist and patriarchal system. From the 1960s on, women writers in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), including Christa Wolf, Irmtraud Morgner, Sarah Kirsch, Brigitte Reimann, Charlotte Worgitzky, Lia Pirskawetz, and Maya Wiens, produced a large, interesting body of writing on women's issues. The Promised Land? is the first book to interrogate the work of these writers as a group for their feminist ideas, ideas that are original, often upbeat, and mostly different from those of the Western feminist movement. In the GDR, a state that existed from 1949 to 1990, women had not only equal rights and good jobs, but also lavish maternity leave and generous childcare benefits designed to make work compatible with motherhood. The ideas presented by the writers discussed here include women as the subject of desire, femininity as a politically progressive model, remaking of the image of woman, and liberating women's speech. By studying these ideas through the lenses of cultural studies, feminist theory, and literary criticism, this book draws comparisons between the situation of women in the GDR and the United States, and between the GDR and Western feminism, and asks whether the GDR really was the "promised land" for women.

Revenge of the Domestic examines gender relations in East Germany from 1945 to the 1970s, focusing especially on the relationship between ordinary women, the Communist Party, and the state created by the Communists, the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The book weaves together personal stories from interviews, statistical material, and evidence from archival research in Berlin, Potsdam, Leipzig, Merseburg, and Chemnitz to reconstruct the complex interplay between state policy toward women and the family on the one hand, and women's reactions to policy on the other. Donna Harsch demonstrates that women resisted state decisions as citizens, wageworkers, mothers, wives, and consumers, and that in every guise they maneuvered to overcome official neglect of the family. As state dependence on female employment increased, the book shows, the Communists began to respond to the insistence of women that the state pay attention to the family. In fits and starts, the party state begrudgingly retooled policy in a more consumerist and family-oriented direction. This "domestication" was partial, ambivalent, and barely acknowledged from above. It also had ambiguous, arguably regressive, effects on the private gender arrangements and attitudes of East Germans. Nonetheless, the economic and social consequences of this domestication were cumulatively powerful and, the book argues, gradually undermined the foundations of the GDR.

Die Beiträge entstanden im Rahmen eines internationalen Symposiums anlässlich des 60. Geburtstages der Autorin, das Ende März 2001 an der Universität Gent stattgefunden hat. Junge wie etablierte Wissenschaftler haben Einzelanalysen und Übersichtsartikel verfasst, die zusammen das gesamte Œuvre von Flugasche bis Pawels Briefe umspannen und zugleich einen Ausblick auf die Zukunft ermöglichen. Die gemeinsame ‘dialogische’ Ausrichtung der präsentierten Einblicke äußert sich darin, dass jeweils mit eigener Akzentsetzung die Grenzen des Textes nach außen hin überschritten werden. Dabei werden nicht nur die vielfältigen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Text und Zeit, sondern auch die bisher viel weniger thematisierte Bedeutung anderer Texte sowie die diversen Arten der Rezeption untersucht.
