This volume examines the trends and patterns of journalists’ harassment in Africa and assesses the policy interventions and protection mechanisms that are put into place in the region. Drawing from case studies from selected African countries, an international team of authors offer a broad insight into the state of harassment across the continent, while building new theoretical perspectives that are also context-specific. This book critically considers how and why centring race in the analysis of journalism deepens our understanding of how race is constructed and experienced in society. In doing so, it offers a theoretical framework for unpacking and dismantling racism within journalism practice and representation. Linking race critical, post- and decolonial theories to the structural-constructivist framework of journalistic field theory, this book examines the role of Black journalists and INGOs in reporting on sub-Saharan Africa in dominant British news organisations. This study goes beyond journalistic representation to consider the racial dynamics informing the production of Western news and the complex relations between journalists of colour and the institutional culture of dominant Western news organisations. After assuming power in 1980, the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) has sought to control the narrative of the struggle for liberation from colonialism, to the exclusion of other players such as the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU). This book investigates the ways in which photographs are being used within Zimbabwe, especially on social media, to challenge the prevailing narrative and reclaim the memories of the subjugated. The book analyses the photographs produced by Zenzo Nkobi during the struggle against colonialism. Drawing on the memories of veterans from ZAPU and its military wing the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZPRA), the book shows that photographs can both act as a conduit for existing narratives, and as a tool for shaping memory narratives, and evidencing ZPRA military prowess ahead of other movements. Building on the momentum of the recent “historical turn” in digital media and Internet studies, this volume explores how digital journalism has developed from a historical perspective. This book makes a critical intervention into debates about journalism and the crisis in local news.
