Paul and the Gentile Problem provides a new explanation for the apostle Paul's statements about the Jewish law. Instead of understanding his arguments against circumcision to be criticisms of Judaism or the law, this book makes the case that Paul meant to oppose gentile judaizing.

In the first major analysis of Paul's understanding of Gentile salvation in several years, Bible scholar Terence Donaldson offers a creative approach to the apostle's theological convictions. According to Donaldson, Paul as a believer in Jesus Christ did not abandon his Jewish frame of reference but reconfigured it, especially by the stimulus of his mission to the Gentiles.

Contesting Conversion written by Matthew Thiessen and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-08 with Religion categories.

Winner of the Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise Matthew Thiessen offers a nuanced and wide-ranging study of the nature of Jewish thought on Jewishness, circumcision, and conversion. Examining texts from the Hebrew Bible, Second Temple Judaism, and early Christianity, he gives a compelling account of the various forms of Judaism from which the early Christian movement arose. Beginning with analysis of the Hebrew Bible, Thiessen argues that there is no evidence that circumcision was considered to be a rite of conversion to Israelite religion. In fact, circumcision, particularly the infant circumcision practiced within Israelite and early Jewish society, excluded from the covenant those not properly descended from Abraham. In the Second Temple period, many Jews began to subscribe to a definition of Jewishness that enabled Gentiles to become Jews. Other Jews, such as the author of Jubilees, found this definition problematic, reasserting a strictly genealogical conception of Jewish identity. As a result, some Gentiles who underwent conversion to Judaism in this period faced criticism because of their suspect genealogy. Thiessen's examination of the way in which Jews in the Second Temple period perceived circumcision and conversion allows a deeper understanding of early Christianity. Contesting Conversion shows that careful attention to a definition of Jewishness that was based on genealogical descent has crucial implications for understanding the variegated nature of early Christian mission to the Gentiles in the first century C.E.

Either Jew Or Gentile written by Eung Chun Park and has been published by Westminster John Knox Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-01-01 with Religion categories.

In this book, Eung Chun Park reconstructs a focused and coherent narrative of the last two decades of the life of Paul as it revolved around the Gentile mission. The result is a detailed and thorough analysis of the Pauline letters that demonstrates how Paul's theology changed over the course of his life as a consequence of his struggle to defend the gospel against the attacks from people who advocated a different kind of gospel. This book traces the development of the two gospels (one that advocated freedom from circumcision and one that advocated observance of circumcision) as they encountered such landmark events as the Apostolic Council in Jerusalem, the Antioch incident, the Galatian incident, the Corinthian incident, and Paul's last visit to Jerusalem.

At a time when the Western church is having to come to terms--painfully and often reluctantly--with its diminished social and intellectual status in the world following the collapse of Christendom, we find ourselves, as interpreters of Paul, increasingly impressed by the need to relocate his writings in their historical context. That is not a coincidence. The Future of the People of God is an attempt to make sense of Paul's letter to the Romans at the intersection of these two developments. It puts forward the argument that we must first have the courage of our historical convictions and read the text before Christendom, from the limited, shortsighted perspective of an emerging community that dared to defy the gods of the ancient world. This act of imaginative, critical engagement with the text will challenge many of our assumptions about Paul's "gospel of God," but it will also put us in a position to reconstruct an identity and purpose for the people of God after Christendom that is both biblically and historically coherent.

These chapters explore a number of issues in the contemporary study of Paul raised by questing what it means to read Paul from within Judaism rather than supposing that he left the practice and promotion of living Jewishly behind after his discovery of Jesus as Christ (Messiah). This is a different question to those which have driven the New Perspective over the last thirty years, which still operates from many traditional assumptions about Pauls motives and behavior, viewing them as inconsistent with and critical of Judaism.
