Scholars generally apply the New Testament Greek terms sōma 'body', pneuma 'spirit', psychē 'soul', and kardia 'heart' to the individual. But what is Paul is referring to with these terms? Dr Chen explores the whole picture. He illustrates that these terms carry social and corporate dimensions, focusing on community or communal unity, thus emphasising the place of the human person within the ecclesial community. Chen's helpful contribution to our understanding of Paul continues in the growing tradition of Moisés Silva, David Black, Stanley Porter, Joel Green, and others, using discourse linguistic principles to refine our understanding of biblical texts. His integrated investigation of the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic features of Paul's anthropological terms in the context of the entire epistles in which they are used rightly challenges us to rethink all that Paul is referring to with these terms--which in turn will challenge us to rethink Paul's understanding of the Church and, indeed, of the entire Gospel message. The Koine Greek particles ἰδού and ἴδε have been traditionally translated as either 'behold' or 'lo'. But such mechanical renderings are inadequate as they suggest these particles can be reduced to a single meaning or function. As argued in this monograph, these particles actually have several distinct uses that are conditioned by their linguistic context, and a translator should find natural idioms in the receptor language that match the meaning and function of these Greek uses.

The monologue of Romans 7 has proved central to the Christian West, where interpreters such as Augustine and Martin Luther have made the text into a paradigm for the plight of mankind, torn between the demands of God's goodness and its own sinful nature. Emma Wasserman argues that the monologue can be better contextualized within certain intellectual discourses alive in Paul's day. In light of certain Platonic traditions about the soul, the monologue emerges as the voice of reason or mind describing its defeat at the hands of passions and desires represented as sin. Especially as developed by Philo of Alexandria, Platonic traditions of representing extreme cases of immorality account for a number of difficult features of the text. Such traditions can account for the metaphors of enslavement, imprisonment, warfare, and death; the representation of the passions as sin and the association with the body, members, and flesh; the Platonic language about mind and the speaker's role in reasoning, reflecting, and judging; the problem of the law in the first part of the monologue (verses 7-13) and the plight of self-contradiction in the second (14-25). The reading thus finds that the speaker is reason or mind, recounting its discovery that it cannot put any of its good judgments into action because of the dominance of the passions.
