Daniel Patte here offers a fresh literary-critical introduction to the dominant literature of the New Testament, the major letters of the apostle Paul: Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians, and Philemon. Patte invites the reader to explore these letters through several readings: an historical reading in which he reviews and critiques the results of traditional interpretations, and structural readings in which he elucidates the main characteristics of Paul's faith and discerns a system of convictions that supports Paul's theology and gives it coherence. Through this novel literary approach, Professor Patte leads the reader of these letters to a better understanding of the power of the Gospel, the relation of the Gospel to Judaism, and Paul's interpersonal view of faith. Here is an invitation to rediscover Paul's faith in all its richness!

It is important for two reasons: First, it is the most thorough application of structuralist method to the Pauline epistles as a whole. The application of structuralist categories turns out to be illuminating and fresh. On literary grounds alone this volume is likely to be significant. Second, the theological insights that Patte presents are sometimes of staggering originality and certainly very challenging. They are particularly so at this time when the problem of the finality and uniqueness of Christ is being re-examined. In this respect Patte's work could be seminal."" --W. D. The concept of God's power is a leading motif in Pauline theology. It functions in key passages of Paul's letters and is intrinsically linked to his theology of the cross and its soteriological explication in the message of justification. Because this concept is so closely related to the message of the cross, Paul often speaks of 'power' in a paradoxical context. Although 'power' is generally assumed to be an important motif in Pauline theology, the concept has not yet been fully explored.Petrus J. Grabe investigates the concept of God's power in Paul's letters. He also gives an overview of God's power in the broader New Testament context in order to distinguish more clearly the specific Pauline interpretation of the power of God. The investigation comprises three sections: A lexico- and conceptual-historical overview of the concept of power, an exegetical investigation of the concept of God's power in Paul's letters and a theological scope of the concept of God's power in the Pauline letters. In the last section Petrus J. Grabe distinguishes between a theological-christological and a pneumatological emphasis. The concept of God's power plays an important role in the way Paul views his apostolic ministry . In the concluding chapter the author therefore deals with Paul's ministry within the christological perspective on weakness and power. The work is an important contribution to Pauline studies and is a well-researched, thorough, and scholarly study.Jeffrey R. Asher in The Catholic Biblical Quarterly vol. 64. (2002), page 762This book is a useful refresher course on Paul, with a valuable dialogue with the most recent monographs and commentaries on his letters.Benedict T. The Faith Of St Paul written by Roy A. Harrisville and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-15 with Religion categories.

For generations, scholars who study the letters of St. Paul have argued about “being-in-Christ” and “justification by faith” as though they were competing theologies. They have argued about faith as divine gift or human work, and more recently the faith of Jesus Christ has been called into question. Harrisville proposes a provocative and simple solution to these issues by examining scholarly assumptions and presenting the faith of St. Paul as a dynamic and life-changing power. Participation in Christ and righteousness by faith are actually complimentary expressions for the same concept. The apostle’s faith was not self-engendered but a gift that transformed him into a believer. Taking a more organic approach to understanding the faith of St. Paul, this book provides a path toward reconciling entrenched positions and providing a fresh perspective by presenting the apostle’s concept of faith as a transformative gift of divine power.

The Obedience Of Faith written by Paul S. Minear and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-05-01 with Religion categories.

Minear puts forward the significance of using the information uncovered from the last three chapters of Romans (14-16) to reconstruct the picture of the situation in Rome and to interpret the letter as a whole accordingly. He challenges the assumption held by many commentators that there was a single Christian congregation in Rome where different groups of Christians worshipped side by side. Minear proposes that Paul is trying to unite the strong and the weak communities in Rome. Paul does this by employing twelve axioms in efforts at reconciliation in 14.1-15.13. According to Minear, it is the purpose of the rest of Romans to explain, support, and defend these axioms.

Paul and the Gift transformed the landscape of Pauline studies upon its publication in 2015. In it, John Barclay led readers through a recontextualized analysis of grace and interrogated Paul’s original meaning in declaring it a “free gift” from God, revealing grace as a multifaceted concept that is socially radical and unconditioned—even if not unconditional. Paul and the Power of Grace offers all of the most significant contributions from Paul and the Gift in a package several hundred pages shorter and more accessible. Additionally, Barclay adds further analysis of the theme of gift and grace in Paul’s other letters—besides just Romans and Galatians—and explores contemporary implications for this new view of grace.

One of the greatest crimes of this generation of Christians is its neglect of the gospel, and it is from this neglect that all our other maladies spring forth. Absent from too many pulpits are the essential themes which make up the very core of the gospel—the justice of God, the radical depravity of man, the blood atonement. In The Gospel’s Power and Message , Paul Washer addresses these essential elements of Christ’s good news and provides a guide to help us rediscover the gospel in all its beauty, scandal, and saving power. May such a rediscovery transform your life, strengthen your proclamation, and bring the greatest glory to God. Table of Contents: Part One: An Apostolic Introduction 1. A Gospel to Know and Make Known 2. A Gospel to Be Received 3. A Gospel by Which We Are Saved 4. A Gospel of First Importance 5. A Gospel Handed Down and Delivered Part Two: The Power of God for Salvation 6. The Gospel 7. A Scandalous Gospel 8. A Powerful Gospel 9. A Gospel for All Who Believe Part Three: The Acropolis of the Christian Faith 10. Making Much of Sin 11. Making Much of God 12. Sinners One and All 13. Sinners Falling Short 14. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ 23. The Foundation of Faith in the Resurrection 24. Christ’s Ascension as the High Priest of His People 25. Christ’s Ascension as the Lord of All 26. Christ’s Ascension as the Judge of All Series Descriptions Although the Recovering the Gospel Series does not represent an entirely systematic presentation of the gospel, it does address most of the essential elements, especially those that are most neglected in contemporary Christianity. It is the hope of the author that these words might be a guide to help you rediscover the gospel in all its beauty, scandal, and saving power. It is his prayer that such a rediscovery might transform your life, strengthen your proclamation, and bring the greatest glory to God.

The "new perspective" on Paul, an approach that seeks to reinterpret the apostle Paul and his letters against the backdrop of first-century Judaism, has been criticized by some as not having value for ordinary Christians living ordinary lives. In this volume, world-renowned scholars explore the implications of the new perspective on Paul for the Christian life and church. James D. G. Dunn, N. T. Wright, Bruce Longenecker, Scot McKnight, and other leading New Testament scholars offer a response to this question: How does the apostle Paul understand the Christian life? The book makes a fresh contribution to the new perspective on Paul conversation and offers important new insights into the orientation of the Christian life.
