This work offers a fresh reading of Paul’s appropriation of Abraham in Gal 3:6–29 against the background of Jewish data, especially drawn from the writings of Philo of Alexandria. Philo’s negotiation on Abraham as the model proselyte and the founder of the Jewish nation based on his trust in God's promise relative to the Law of Moses provides a Jewish context for a corresponding debate reflected in Galatians, and suggests that there were Jewish antecedents that came close to Paul’s reasoning in his own time. This volume incorporates a number of new arguments in the context of scholarly discussion of both Galatian 3 and some of the Philonic texts, and demonstrates how the works of Philo can be applied responsibly in New Testament scholarship.

Galatians is simultaneously one of Paul's most well-known and least understood letters. At times Galatians is reduced down to a single concept, like freedom, or to a single passage about either justification by faith or the fruit of the Spirit, and yet the personal and scriptural argument that Paul was making to his original readers is usually ignored in the process. Instead of treating Galatians like a first draft of Romans, as is also typically done, Reading Galatians highlights the unique features of Galatians, which make it peculiar among the writings of Paul. It also overviews Paul's engagement with the Galatians from his initial ministry among them to what transpired after he left and all the way through to his multifaceted response, what we can glean about their reaction to it, and why it still matters to us today.

For almost two millennia, readers of the New Testament have been trying to figure out Paul. The struggle with his words begins already within the canon itself. While Acts portrays with ease a Torah-observant, Pharisaic-messianic Paul working in partnership with James and other leaders in Jerusalem, the author of 2 Peter famously admitted that the apostle to the nations is difficult to understand. From that moment on debate has ebbed and flowed on all things Pauline; on women as leaders in assemblies and on the status of Jews and Gentiles in God's plan, just to mention two of the contentious topics associated with Paul. For clergy, scholar, and lay person, Paul's letters hold weight and continue to draw in new readers. Anders Runesson seeks to listen to the voice of the historical Paul - a Jew proclaiming a form of Judaism to non-Jews to save them from divine wrath - but also to probe what it means to breathe new life into this historical figure in the twenty-first century.

This book charts the shifting boundaries of Judaism from antiquity to the modern period in order to bring clarity to what scholars mean when they claim that ancient texts or groups are “within Judaism,” as well as exploring how rabbinic Jews, Christians, and Muslims have negotiated and renegotiated what Judaism is and is not in order to form their own identities. Belief in Jesus as the Messiah was seen as part of first-century Judaism, but by the fourth or fifth century, the boundaries had shifted and adherence to Jesus came to be seen as outside of Judaism. Resituating New Testament texts within first- or second-century Judaism is an historical exercise that may broaden our view of what Judaism looked like in the early centuries CE, but normatively these texts remain within Christianity because of their reception history. The historical “within Judaism” perspective, however, has the potential to challenge and reshape the theology of contemporary Christianity while at the same time the long-held consensus that belief in Jesus cannot belong within Judaism is again challenged by the modern Messianic Jewish movement.

What does the Letter to the Hebrews have to say to Christians today? A compelling exhortation to hold true to the faith in the face of adversity. A sermon full of iconic imagery and Old Testament allusions. A signal work of theology in the New Testament. Above all, the Letter to the Hebrews proclaims the high priesthood of Jesus Christ. Yet readers may find this central theme difficult to discern, given the epistle’s complexity and long history of interpretation. In this Pillar commentary, Sigurd Grindheim richly illuminates the Letter to the Hebrews, explaining difficult texts, offering a coherent reading, and paying careful attention to linguistic features and historical context—all while focusing on its relevance to modern readers. Grindheim clearly and comprehensively addresses major issues, including authorship, date, canonicity, formal qualities, and important themes. Following his thorough introduction, he explains each line of the text and its significance for believers today. Grindheim’s commentary offers pastors, students, and scholars the clarity and fresh insights they want in their scriptural study.
