Das Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum zeigt zum 100. Todestag der Kuenstlerin eine Ausstellung mit der faszinierenden Gegenueberstellung von Portraits aus zwei Jahrtausenden: ägyptische Mumienbildnisse und Portraits von Paula Modersohn-Becker, die in diesem Katalog präsentiert werden. Angeregt durch antike Mumienbildnisse im Louvre findet Paula Modersohn-Becker in Paris am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einem radikal modernen Portraitstil, der wegweisend wird fuer eine ganze Epoche. »Die grosse Einfachheit der Form ist etwas Wunderbares. Jetzt fuehle ich tief, wie ich an den Köpfen der Antike lernen kann«, schrieb sie im Februar 1903 in ihr Tagebuch. Neben ihren persönlichen Aufzeichnungen druecken sich Interesse und Begeisterung fuer die antike Bildnis- kunst vor allem anhand ihrer späten Selbstportraits aus, in denen sowohl in der Malweise als auch in Ausschnitt und Haltung der Portraitierten der ägyptisch-antike Einfluss mit vollkommener Überzeugungskraft ins Auge fällt. Während derartige Parallelen zwischen Mumienportraits und dem Werk von Kuenstlern wie Ferdinand Hodler oder André Derain nur vermutet werden, sind sie im Werk von Paula Modersohn-Becker klar dokumentiert und nachweisbar. In ihnen offenbart sich die Suche nach einem bildlichen Ausdruck fuer das Menschsein als eine Wesensverwandtschaft des Kuenstlerischen ueber Jahrtausende hinweg. Die Ausstellung zum 100. Todestag im Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum, dem weltweit ersten Kuenstlerinnenmuseum, vereint bedeutende Beispiele der ebenso eleganten wie eindringlichen Mumienportraitkunst mit malerischen Höhepunkten aus den letzten Schaffensjahren Paula Modersohn-Beckers.
