In 1932, world-renowned physicist Wolfgang Pauli had already done the work that would win him the 1945 Nobel Prize. He was also suffering after a series of troubling personal events. He was drinking heavily, quarrelling frequently, and experiencing powerful, disturbing dreams. Pauli turned to C. G. Jung for help, forging an extraordinary intellectual conjunction not just between a physicist and a psychologist but between physics and psychology. As their acquaintance developed, Jung and Pauli discussed the nature of dreams and their relation to reality, finding surprising common ground between depth psychology and quantum physics and profoundly influencing each other's work. This portrait of an incredible friendship will fascinate readers interested in psychology, science, creativity, and genius.

The Austrian physicist Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958) was often called the conscience of physics. He was famous for his sharp and critical mind which made him a central figure among the founders of quantum physics. He also was an outstanding philosopher, especially interested in finding a new conception of reality and of causality. A careful study of the original sources of the past culminated in his study of Kepler and of medieval symbolism, a concept that played a central role in his discussion with Carl Jung on what they called the psycho-physical problem. Pauli considered the sharp distinctions between knowledge and faith and between spirit and matter as dangerous. He thought they should complement each other in our comprehension of reality. Professor Laurikainen here for the first time describes Pauli's ideas in detail. His book is based on the large and as yet unpublished correspondence between Pauli and M. Fierz. Its careful analysis adds depth and clarity to the few publications by Pauli on philosophical problems and explains why Pauli grasped the meaning of atomic theory more deeply than even Niels Bohr himself. The book should interest both philosophers and physicists and should encourage further studies on Pauli the humanist and his contribution to our understanding of reality.

The Return of the World Soul is the dramatic story of the struggle of two great minds. Carl Jung the father of depth psychology and Wolfgang Pauli one of the most exceptional physicists of the twentieth century transcend the limitations of their respective disciplines and discover a true unus mundus- a world that unifies and transcends the domains of inner and outer. Through the course of their many exchanges, Jung and Pauli envision a future in which there is not only a radical change in the nature of personal consciousness but a transformation of humanity as a whole.

It also forces is to a basic reconsideration of the meaning of chance, probability, coincidence and the singular events in our lives.

The pioneering work of Nobel prize-winning physicist Wolfgang Pauli led to developing the bombs that decimated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Desperate over this outcome, Pauli sought help from the eminent depth psychologist, C. G. Jung. Their long correspondence provides the powerful and unique record of a mature scientist's inner journey. It also has had a tremendous impact on scientific and psychological thought ever since. Pauli and Jung is a lucid interpretation of Pauli's ideas and dreams that forcefully validates his belief in the inseparable union of science and spirituality. Far ahead of their time, Wolfgang Pauli and C. G. Jung both knew this union is essential for the future of humanity and the survival of the planet.

This book includes essays that emphasize the part played by pre-existing images or archetypes in the development of concepts and scientific theories and stress the need for complementary principles in nature. It is a translation of "Synchronizitat als ein Prinzip akausaler Zusammenhange". In 1952 Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli, both at the height of their reputations, co-wrote The Interpretation of Nature and the Psyche. It contained one essay by each author: Jung’s presents a challenge to mainstream science and advances the principle of synchronicity and Pauli’s argues for a more holistic conception of modern science. Roderick Main presents the original essays here with a brand-new introduction and commentary which reviews how the original text was viewed, and which traces the subsequent influences of both the essays and the two authors.
