A gorgeous and meticulously-researched historical fiction examining a young woman's struggle to escape unexpected poverty and find autonomy and purpose in early New England. Mankind are always seeking after happiness in some way or another. Leavitt's Farmer's Almanac, 1805 The fall from beloved wife of the town blacksmith to widowed pauper was swift. Margery Turner sits in the Thorneboro, New Hampshire Meetinghouse on the second Tuesday of March, 1805. She and the other indigent town residents wait their turn to be auctioned out to the lowest bidder who will accept the paupers into their homes in return for town funds. The young widow and an abandoned child named Agnes find themselves taken in by farmer and ciderist Samuell Wheeler and his elderly mother, renowned bed rug maker Hannah Wheeler. Margery swears to herself that she will not forever remain a pauper in purse or purpose. Secrets and sorrows live on the prosperous farm. An itinerant Abenaki stonemason, Sozap Wzôkhilain, known as Joseph, soon joins the household and touches each of their lives in unexpected ways. The farm is the setting for danger and tragedy as well as simple joys and blossoming love. In Pauper Auction, strangers become friends, confidantes, and lovers. Tragedy becomes hope, and a family of the heart help each other find their futures, together and apart. Rich and atmospheric period description and a strong sense of New England enhance this immersive narrative. Meticulously researched details of early 19th century foodways, and the crafts of blacksmithing, traditional stone wall building, needlework, hearth cooking, and hard cider-making bring Margery's world to life. The novel is a perfect bookclub pick with themes that transcend time. A significant Afterword and Discussion Guide are included in the book.

The Welfare Debate written by Greg M. Shaw and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-30 with History categories.

Welfare politics have now been part of American life for four centuries. Beyond a persistent general idea that Americans have a collective obligation to provide for the poorest among us, there has been little common ground on which to forge political and philosophical consensus. Are poor people poor because of their own shortcomings and moral failings, or because of systemic societal and economic obstacles? That is, does poverty have individual or structural causes? This book demonstrates why neither of these two polemical stances has been able to prevail permanently over the other and explores the public policy—and real-life—consequences of the stalemate. Author Greg M. Shaw pays special attention to the outcome of the 1996 act that was heralded as ending welfare as we know it. Historically, people on all sides of the welfare issue have hated welfare—but for different reasons. Like our forebears, we have constantly disagreed about where to strike the balance between meeting the basic needs of the very poor and creating dependency, or undermining individual initiative. The shift in 1996 from New Deal welfare entitlement to workfare mirrored the national mood and ascendant political ideology, as had welfare policy throughout American history. The special contribution of this book is to show how evolving understandings of four key issues—markets, motherhood, race, and federalism—have shaped public perceptions in this contentious debate. A rich historical narrative is here complemented by a sophisticated analytical understanding of the forces at work behind attempts to solve the welfare dilemma. How should we evaluate the current welfare-to-work model? Is a precipitous decline in state welfare caseloads sufficient evidence of success? Success, this book finds, has many measures, and ending welfare as an entitlement program has not ended arguments about how best to protect children from the ravages of poverty or how to address the plight of the most vulnerable among us.

Under Sealed Orders written by H.A. Cody and has been published by Formac Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-12 with Fiction categories.

Mystery, betrayal, and murder are key ingredients in this early 20th-century love story set in rural New Brunswick. Novelist H. A. Cody has created a cast of sympathetic characters to tell the story of a pauper auction -- an extraordinary and authentically-described local custom where local residents bid against each other to earn money by taking in poverty-stricken orphans, seniors and others. In Cody’s novel, the auction has its ironic aftermath. Not only does the reader have an entertaining story to enjoy, but there is also a universal lesson to be learned. Under Sealed Orders is the latest addition to the Formac Fiction Treasures series. Under the overall editorial direction of Gwen Davies, the series now encompasses 32 novels by Canadian authors from the Maritime provinces published in the last decades of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th centuries. All titles in the series were bestsellers in their era, and many of the authors were successful enough to make writing their fulltime profession.

Fiction Treasures By Maritime Writers written by Gwendolyn Davies and has been published by Formac Publishing Company Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-13 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Though little known today, from 1860 to 1940 Canadian novelists from the Maritime provinces were writing highly successful books which were widely read in Canada, the US, and Britain. Although today only Lucy Maud Montgomery is remembered and read, there were several dozen writers who enjoyed the same level of success and renown. This book brings these authors and their most successful books back into the spotlight of Canadian writing. In 2001, Canadian literature specialist Gwen Davies and Formac publisher James Lorimer set out to republish books by these largely forgotten Maritime authors. Readers can now discover 35 of their novels, all reprinted in Formac's Fiction Treasures series. For each book, series editor Gwen Davies commissioned an introduction by a contemporary scholar who offers a brief biography of the writer and a discussion of the text itself. As Gwen Davies notes, "These introductions not only capture new research in literary biography or publishing history, but also broaden our understanding of regional popular reading tastes from the era of Queen Victoria to the Second World War." This book brings these introductory essays together in a single volume so that readers can discover these writers and get an overview of their best works.

Hidden History Of Litchfield County written by Peter C. Vermilyea and has been published by Arcadia Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-04 with Reference categories.

Local historian Peter C. Vermilyea tells stories of some forgotten moments in Litchfield County, CT from Native American legends to Cold War relics. Traces of Litchfield County's past are hidden in plain sight. Vestiges of long-abandoned railroad tracks crisscross the county while a decaying and unmarked cinder block structure in Warren is all that remains of a cornerstone of national defense. All but forgotten today, a fire roared through Winsted in 1908, causing residents to flee their rooms at the Odd Fellows boardinghouse. In Bantam, art deco chairs made by the Warren McArthur Corporation prompted the War Department to order bomber seats from the company during World War II. Author Peter C. Vermilyea explores these and other obscure tales from the history of Litchfield County, Connecticut.
