“Apartheid South Africa was on fire around me.” So begins the memoir of Career Foreign Service Officer Edward J. Perkins, the first black United States ambassador to South Africa. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan gave him the unparalleled assignment: dismantle apartheid without violence. As he fulfilled that assignment, Perkins was scourged by the American press, despised by the Afrikaner government, hissed at by white South African citizens, and initially boycotted by black South African revolutionaries, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu. His advice to President-elect George H. W. Bush helped modify American policy and hasten the release of Nelson Mandela and others from prison. Perkins’s up-by-your-bootstraps life took him from a cotton farm in segregated Louisiana to the white elite Foreign Service, where he became the first black officer to ascend to the top position of director general. This is the story of how one man turned the page of history.

This book presents a meticulously-researched biography on Guillermo Belt Ramírez, one of Cuba’s most important diplomats of the 20th century. As Ambassador, Belt represented his homeland in the United States and the Soviet Union as the Cold War turned wartime allies into enemies. He also represented a generation of diplomats who, after bearing witness to the horrors of war, had the resolve to join to create the United Nations and regional organizations such as the Organization of American States. Belt’s success in the diplomatic and political spheres were met with the pain and hardship of exile. Thanks to his faith, the love of his family, and an unwavering sense of patriotism, Belt persevered, maintaining his passion for Cuba’s democratic values and ideals until his passing. In doing so, he became a respected and sought after voice for Cuban exiles in Washington’s diplomatic and government circles. This book explores several key questions: • Who was Guillermo Belt and what role did he play in Cuban politics and diplomacy? • What was Cuba’s role in world affairs during and after World War II? • How does Cuba’s diplomatic history help explain current U.S.-Cuban relations within a broader political and historical context as reflected by Ambassador Belt’s life?

A revelatory, behind-the-scenes account of Russian-American relations, from a former US ambassador and 'Obama's top White House advisor on Russia policy' (The New York Times) In 2008, when Michael McFaul was asked to leave his perch at Stanford and join President-elect Barack Obama's national security team, he had no idea that he would find himself at the beating heart of one of today's most contentious international relationships. McFaul had been studying and visiting Russia for decades, becoming one of America's preeminent scholars on the country during the first Putin era. During President Obama's first term, McFaul helped craft the policy known as "Reset," which fostered unprecedented collaboration between the two countries under Dmitry Medvedev's presidency. Later, as U.S. ambassador from 2012 to 2014, he witnessed firsthand how Vladimir Putin's new rise interrupted this era of cooperation and returned Russian-American relations to a level of hostility not known since the darkest days of the Cold War. From the outset of his ambassadorship, the Kremlin accused McFaul of being sent by Obama to foment revolution against Putin's regime. This resulting insider's account - uniquely combining history, politics and intimate personal knowledge of the corridors of power - takes us from Putin's dacha to ornate Kremlin chambers and the Oval Office, to explain how Russia really works, and why the world has entered a dangerous new era of confrontation.

"Ambassadors for Peace represents an important contribution at a time when cross-cultural understanding and exchange is imperative. The exchange fellows from Pakistan and the United States who share their experiences and impressions help to fulfill the vision of Senator Fulbright to build peace by investing in international exchange and understanding among students and scholars." ~ Prof. William W. Monning, J.D., Monterey Institute of International Studies; Senior Fulbright Scholar; President, Global Majority "It is a pleasure to see how exchange scholars in their unique role as true ambassadors of peace can impact a world fraught with conflict, violence and dubious diplomacy. Like the flight of doves, the book shows gentle stirrings of life, hope and friendship." ~ Nibir K Ghosh, Author of Multicultural America & Chief Editor, Re-Markings "More than a glimpse into the lives of these shining scholars, it is a wonderful testament to their strive for mutual understanding and harmony. Simply a compelling read" ~ Siraj A. Shaikh, United Nations University The production of this book was partially sponsored by the Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology. www.FulbrightAcademy.org
