The development of prejudice and discrimination has its roots in our genetic/evolutionary heritage. Although the specific targets of prejudice are primarily determined by the culture and history of the society in which people reside, the particular socialization experiences children and adolescents have can alter these influences. As Harold Fishbein explains, research shows that prejudice and discrimination have different developmental courses, and moreover, that development within each domain—ethnicity, gender, deafness, mental retardation—is somewhat unique.Fishbein contends that prejudice and discrimination can be reduced. Desegregation and mainstreaming have had little positive effect by themselves, but cooperative learning in classroom settings among different ethnic groups, different genders, or handicapped and non-handicapped individuals has been consistently found to have positive effects. One factor that appears to have a powerful influence in both the transmission of prejudice and its reduction is the sanction of members of the most dominant groups in a culture. Thus, prejudice and discrimination from a societal point of view are top-down phenomena.This book is a valuable text for advanced courses in developmental and social psychology, as well as useful supplemental reading for courses in biological or evolutionary psychology. Discrimination impacts most youth at some point. Almost all children and adolescents belong to at least one stigmatized group, whether they are a Black or Latino boy in school; an immigrant or refugee; a gay, lesbian, or bisexual teen; or a girl in physics class. Discrimination on the basis of race/ethnicity, immigration status, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity can have long-term academic, psychological, and social repercussions, especially when it is directed at a cognitively developing child or an emotionally vulnerable adolescent. How children and adolescents are impacted by this discrimination depends on their cognitive ability to perceive the bias, the context in which the bias occurs, and resources they have to help cope with the bias. This book details, synthesizes, and analyzes the perception and impact of discrimination in childhood and adolescence across multiple stigmatized social groups to help us better understand the complex phenomenon of discrimination and its long-term consequences. By looking at the similarities and differences in discrimination across all social groups, we can more fully understand its mechanisms of influence. Before we can fully address the persistent achievement gap between White and ethnic minority children, the high rates of suicidal thoughts among LGBT youth, and the underrepresentation of girls in STEM careers, we must first examine the ways in which discrimination influences and is understood by children, with their unique cognitive constraints and within the specific contexts in which they live.

As the population of older Americans grows, it is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. Differences in health by racial and ethnic status could be increasingly consequential for health policy and programs. Such differences are not simply a matter of education or ability to pay for health care. For instance, Asian Americans and Hispanics appear to be in better health, on a number of indicators, than White Americans, despite, on average, lower socioeconomic status. The reasons are complex, including possible roles for such factors as selective migration, risk behaviors, exposure to various stressors, patient attitudes, and geographic variation in health care. This volume, produced by a multidisciplinary panel, considers such possible explanations for racial and ethnic health differentials within an integrated framework. It provides a concise summary of available research and lays out a research agenda to address the many uncertainties in current knowledge. It recommends, for instance, looking at health differentials across the life course and deciphering the links between factors presumably producing differentials and biopsychosocial mechanisms that lead to impaired health.
