Pelvic Pain Explained written by Stephanie A. Prendergast and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-07 with Health & Fitness categories.

At its heart, Pelvic Pain Explained is the story of how patients develop pelvic pain, the challenges patients and providers face throughout the diagnosis and treatment process, the difficult task of sifting through the different available treatment options, and the impact that an “invisible” condition has on a patient’s life and relationships, and much more. Those who develop pelvic pain find the path to proper diagnosis and treatment frustrating and unsuccessful, oftentimes because they are trying to work within the model of recovery they are used to; one in which they go to the doctor, maybe take some tests and then get a very specific diagnosis that dictates a very specific mode of treatment. This simply is not the path to healing from pelvic pain. Pelvic pain is a health issue that crosses the borders between medical disciplines and requires the patient to be a proactive participant in the healing process. Here, Stephanie Prendergast and Elizabeth Rummer offer readers guidance on navigating a pelvic pain diagnosis and treatment, helping them to better understand their pain from a physiological perspective as well as how to digest the current treatment options available and put them on the path to healing. Providers, too, will gain a better understanding of the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary treatment approach. Major topics the book tackles include: the anatomy of the pelvic floor with an explanation of the many ways pelvic pain occurs; the different diagnoses and contributing factors associated with pelvic pain; a discussion of the current treatment landscape with guidance on how to navigate it; the vital role that PT plays in treatment; male pelvic pain; pregnancy and pelvic pain; sex and pelvic pain; the role of the patient in healing; the role of the brain in pelvic pain; and much more. Anyone with pelvic pain will find here a starting point on the road to healing and living pelvic pain free.

This book provides readers with a holistic approach to chronic pelvic pain which is an extremely complex condition with associated pelvic dysfunctions. This approach significantly facilitates and accelerates the clinical assessment and subsequent follow-up. The pathophysiologic mechanisms involving the nervous system, the pelvic organs and the pelvic floor are discussed, deepening the possible implications on mind, sexuality and pelvic dysfunctions. Evaluation and diagnosis are examined for different types of syndromes. Moreover, since the Bladder Pain Syndrome and the Interstitial Cystitis are main causes of pelvic pain, an original diagnostic approach is proposed specifically for these conditions. In order to deliver the best clinical outcomes, this new system provides a multidisciplinary approach, both in the diagnostic phase and in the therapeutic phase The most recent therapies for chronic pelvic pain following a multidisciplinary approach are described in detail. Due to its practice-oriented contents, the book will greatly benefit all professionals dealing with this debilitating disease, supporting them in their daily clinical routine.

Pregnancy weakens the ligaments that keep the pelvic bones together. If those weakened ligaments become overloaded or injured, it results in pelvic instability — pain around the joints that can be brief or last for years after the birth. In 1996, Cecile Röst, who suffered from this condition herself, devised a treatment program that is simple, home based, and proven to work. Her book, with over 100 illustrations and detailed testimonials, is divided into two parts. The first part shows simple exercises for symmetry and stabilization, and the proper way to lie, sit, and get out of a car in order to prevent pelvic instability during pregnancy. Patients can practice these exercises and positions with or without a care provider’s help. Part two, aimed at care providers, shows the results of a survey carried out among 200 women suffering from pelvic complaints. Here the author also presents a theoretical treatise of pelvic pain, the protocol of the first consult, and the contents of the therapy, including a sports program.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) involves a list of deviations with persistent pain in the pelvic area as the main factor. Multiple pain syndromes exist for this, and, after assessment, the reason for the chronic symptoms often remains unclear. The exclusion of the origins or reasons for the pain that can be treated curatively is of the greatest importance. When no reasons for the pain can be found, or when the pain cannot be healed, symptomatic treatment will be necessary. The most successful treatment of CPP is a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together doctors, nurses, physical therapists, osteopaths, and psychologists. Chronic pain has an important impact on the quality of life and strong negative consequences on the psychologic and emotional state of the patient. In addition, the success of the (usually long-term) treatment is not easy to predict. Beginning with a general discussion, this book considers pain abnormalities in the most important parts of the small pelvis. It also discusses various treatments of these issues, and delves into the psychological approach to such pain.
